A Rottweiler on steroids! Great dogs, very loyal. Ancestors marched with the Roman Legions. Mastiff family from Puglia region of Italy.

Funny you mentioned the Rottie, When I got my first Cane I was looking for a Rottie stumbled upon a black Cane Corso.
I've owned at least one ever since.

    Any owners around here?

I haven't owned one but I was considering one. I currently have a 90lb American Bulldog and have been looking for a 2nd dog.

    Few questions;
    1. How bad is their chewing phase?
    2. Any issues with children (assuming you have)?
    3. As smart as they say?
    4. As protective as they say? Any issues introducing new people or the UPS person stopping by?
    5. Any separation anxiety when you go away or can you leave them to roam the house?

    Thanks!

Hey Ross all good questions and owning an American Bulldog is a great start. The Cane Corso is more of a mastiff temperament, more layed back than the bulldog. I've owned Cane Corsos for close to twenty years now. Had some of the first dogs in the U.S. Some basic training and early socialization is the key to a manageable dog.
1.Chewing phase really depends on how much you allow them too. You can give them constructive toys to keep them out of trouble when they are teething. Puppy proof the house like you would for a small child.
    2. Again socialization for any dog is a big key. Attached is a picture of my daughter when she was younger with our, then 13 yr old, Shutzhund trained male. They were best friends. I have a female now which my eight year old and all her friends grew up with. They all look forward to play dates so they can play with the dog and the dog couldn't be happier to see them when they stop by.
    3. As smart as they say? Very much so. I'm still waiting for mine to start talking :)
    4. As protective as they say? Yes and no. They are guardians but a true Cane Corso should never be outwardly aggressive unless there is a problem.
Any issues introducing new people or the UPS person stopping by? Socialize early and you will be good to go. My girl dog lets out a park to let us know someone is at the door then once we let them in she starts to wag and lets them pet her. Its all in how you raise them.
    5. Any separation anxiety when you go away or can you leave them to roam the house?
Most people end up with the separation anxiety, not the dogs. I always suggest crate training. If done properly its a great way to keep everyone happy. The dog has a place they feel safe and it keeps them out of trouble when they are not supervised. After a few months you can leave the door to the crate open and they will go there as soon as you walk out the door. A little while longer you remove the crate, and the dog will usually just go lay where the crate once was or find a nice quite place to hang out.

The other pics are my female and our new additions.
