I currently have the new Canon 5D Mark II 15mm Camera. It comes with a video capability which is awesome but for some reason I can't upload the videos. I have a mac and whenever I plug in the camera, the pictures open up on iphoto and there are thumbnails for the videos but I can't upload them. Does any one know what to do? Do I need to buy a special program to download them? I tried to look around on random sites but I don't really understand what they are saying. Can someone tell me what to do in "simple" terms?

Doesn't your user manual have the necessary info?

Last Q first - No, you certainly shouldn't.

Full disclosure: I have never used Canon kit (I'm a Nikon guy).

But, I'd try starting up iMovie on the Mac, then plug in the camera - If you're lucky iMovie will "recognize" the camera and allow you to import the movies.

If that doesn't do it, try plugging in the camera before starting iMovie.... [Can't do any harm.]

Remember, iPhoto is for still (basically) jpg images. iMovie is for movies. The fact that you're seeing "thumbnails" in iPhoto suggests a "bad" extension on the videos......

If that doesn't do it, what happens when you open the mounted camera in the finder? - Does that show all your files? [Both still and video?] - If so, what is the extension on the videos?

    HTH, cheers,
    Ian

I looked but it only talks about uploading the pictures as well as looking at the videos on a tv, but not on a computer.

When I open up finder it doesn't even recognize the camera. So far the only program that recognizes it is iphoto. That's why I can't upload the vids onto imovie, whenever I try to import it I can't even find the folder for the camera. Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Will

Hmmm...... When you plug in the camera, does it appear on your desktop? [With/without iPhoto running?....]

Having said that, a quick search on the Apple forums revealed:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8882106

Which suggests you should be able to do it, but will have to reduce the resolution (!) in order for it to handle it - Which as stated in the thread, kind of sucks. It also appears it could be iMovie version dependent. However, the stuff I read suggests you should be able to import 'em, just that it crashes the application at full resolution..... :(

I suggest searching around on the Apple iMovie forums - They're pretty helpful.

    HTH,
    Cheers,
    Ian

    Hey,

    From another thread:

    The full thing is here:

But according to the thread, everyone is at least able to find the folder with their videos in it to upload onto imovie, they are just having trouble with the size. But I can't even find the movies to import onto imovie in the first place.

Understood (now!) - Do you "see" your still picture folder(s) when the camera is mounted? [Via the finder, not iPhoto - iPhoto will only show "stuff" it understands.]

If so, it *may* be objecting to the extension - Dunno why - It should display 'em albeit it doesn't understand what to do with 'em.

I guess I'd try MPEG Streamclip (you'll need it at some point if you're "playing" with video, and it's free.)

Another possible alternative, mentioned in another thread here recently, is the also free VLC player:

    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Trouble is, until you can see the damn files (somehow) you're one step away from from being able to do anything with 'em..... :( [Although, you did say they showed up as thumbnails in iPhoto - Correct? - If so, you may be able to "Apple-click" (or similar) on the thumbnail and say "Open with" - Either of the above options.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

I tried the VLC player but once again I can't even find the video to upload in the first place. I guess this will help: Here are pictures of my finder (my camera is plugged in but nothing is showing up), of the thumbnails of the videos in iphoto, and of when I right click the thumbnail. Is something not working like it is supposed to? As you can see there is only one option on the video because it hasn't been uploaded yet (but I can't even do the first step!!!!!!!... I'm so frustrated right now...)
and imovie doesn't recognize it either...

I can tell.... Take some deep breaths and calm down :)

Before we go any further, and while I admire your "ingenuity" of photographing the screen, please use:

    Applications -> utilities -> grab -> [window | screen | selection | etc ] - See attached.

Anyway, from the pix you posted:

Pic#1 - We're looking in your home directory ("William"), and not the desktop. You also want to "eject" the 3 disk images sitting there - I'd also reboot.

Pic#2 - You said earlier you were looking at thumbnails of your vid's - These are placeholders awaiting a drag & drop.

Pic#3 - So, what does "show photo info" have to say? [I suspect nothing, 'cos there's nothing there yet, but I'm surprised it's not "greyed out"]

BTW, there's a lot of unanswered Q's above. Good luck,

    Cheers,
    Ian

I'm a Nikon guy so I don't how the Canon works. Is the video stored on a SD card? Can you put the card into a card reader and then upload the pictures to your desktop?

    haha thank you :)

When I press the desktop in the finder there is nothing in it. And when you say "drag & drop", where do i "drop"?

Also, when I press "show photo info", it says the file is a ".mov"

BTW Ian, I'm going to Mexico tomorrow so it looks like I have to take a break from this camera "thing" because I won't have it with me. I'll probably have more questions when I get back (Wednesday). :D

    Hey,

#1 - Hopefully you had fun in Mexico.
#2 - Lack of further comments suggests you've either:
    a. Given up in disgust
    b. Got it working - Hopefully your "break" did the trick......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Actually when I got back I still tried for so long!! I finally got the videos onto another laptop (not a mac) but the videos jumped every time they were played. Any ideas about that?

Lots of ideas...... How old is the 'puter you got 'em on to? - Unless it's got a pretty good graphics card "stuttering" (low frame rate) will happen - At least until you compress the files down some..... What player are you using?

I also noticed in your 2nd photo above that the camera is indeed "mounted" as a device - Albeit within iPhoto. Have you tried minimizing iphoto at this point and opening a finder window? Does it still show up? If not you may want to go into iPhoto preferences - In there somewhere is an option for the action to take whenever a ("reasonable") device is connected - The default is to open iPhoto. Disable that and have it "ask me what to do" - Plug it back in, it should now ask you - MPEG Streamclip would be my initial choice......

    Cheers,
    Ian

No, no matter what the camera doesn't show up in finder. But I'll try changing the settings for when I plug it in and let you know how that goes.

Sorry if any of this is redundant as I didn't read every post in the thread.

My wife had the same problem and found the following method worked with some small issues.
The Canon supplied software won't do it (at least we haven't found a way)

Create a folder to hold the downloads
Change the system settings to not open iphoto automatically when you connect the camera.
Open image capture (utility that came on Mac) after camera is connected
Select the previously created folder for the download destination
In the automated task combo box select "none"
Then click the button to download "some" not "all"

The individual downloads take time depending on their length and if you selected all your camera may time out or battery may run down.

Also the videos only play in Quicktime in landscape mode so if you recorded some in portrait mode they will play sideways. We haven't seriously looked for a utility to rotate the vids yet.

We haven't upgraded to iphoto '09 so we don't know if it solves any of the issues.

Do you have a card reader? The video files are stored on the CF card. Just copy the files off the card.
