Either a leak or a really good photoshop job. I'm thinking it's real. Supposedly TBA on March 2. Rumored specs: 22MP full frame, 61-pt AF base on the 1Dx system. I'm hoping for about 1 stop better sensitivity performance and DR than the mk2. Rumored MSRP of 3500, meaning it would have I be crushingly good to compete with the D800. Certainly looks real, is it just me or do cameras seem to keep getting more expensive, 5D2 was what $2500 when it first came out?
Accounting for inflation it's not bad. The original 5d was like 3300. Old models aside, Isuspect they may have leaked a high number in order to make 3k street prices seem appealing. 500 more than the d800 (and a couple hundred more than the d800e) would be a hard sell for those who specifically don't want a crazy pixel count.
Could be, but you also have to take into account that the orig 5D was the first non-pro full frame camera, which was a huge accomplishment. This new camera is really just combining a lot of already developed features. The comparison of price with the D800 makes sense. More is always better as we know.
But, the 5d and 5d two used existing sensors (from previous generation 1ds models). If this is really 22, it's an entirely new sensor, so we are eating additional development costs. Nikon is using Sony sensor, which most certainly helps amortize sensor engineering costs. Either way, I hope it's cheaper than the rumor. I'm planning to pre order I the spec sheet looks like the rumors.
These are nice cameras. I always love the nikon vs canon debate because at this level rare is the photographer that actually switches from one to the other it seems. Mainly due to the investment in lenses for a certain mount. The total investment in the lenses it takes these cameras to really perform dwarfs the cost of the bodies. The D800 does look like the real deal, and this isn't too shabby either. The MP race is about to win over lens resolution if it hasn't already. Personally, I'm keeping a watch on the lowering of the D700 prices and maybe get one before its totally discontinued....I have nikon lenses.
True, though if you own quality glass, you don't lose a whole hell of a lot on re-sale. That said, it's a PITA, hence my staying with Canon. I too was really interested by the D7000. However I want a full frame sensor to compliment my film camera, and I don't want to deal with 36MP files (yah you can shoot the D800 on smaller raw, but nah). Plus there is a good potential that the lower-density sensor will provide greater dynamic range and sensitivity. I hope so anyway. Exciting times. I've used the crap out of my 40d (50k actuations). It's starting to stutter now. I'll keep it for the one remaining EF-S (crop body) lens I have, and as a backup. I'm down to either the 5D3 if it materializes as I hope it will (sensitivity and DR exceeding the 5D2 by a discernible/usable amount; AF as good or better than the 7D, hopefully on par with the D7000), or a 5D2.
What sort of issues are you seeing? The shutter button on my Rebel started having problems about 70k pictures, it had seen a LOT of abuse on several desert deployments and I eventually gave up on it for regular use. Still works fine if I hook up the remote release, just the button seems to have died. The 5D Mk II I bought to replace it now has almost 60k pictures and occasionally it has stuttered on me as well though it could have been a fluke. The 5D III looks pretty awesome but I'm not sure I could justify spending $3500 if that is the body only price. When I bought my 5D Mk II three years ago STOLE it from AAFES for $2000, at the time they were around $2500 on Amazon. If it's over $3k street price I would probably send my Mk II back for a tuneup and wait for the price to come down a bit.
I hear people say that but I have never really seen much used glass around for sale. Because I use my stuff pretty hard my guess is that I wouldn't get nearly as much but I have kinda been eyeballing some new glass (24-70 f2.8L) and selling the 24-105 f4 L just to justify the expenditure a bit. Can't even say the last time I used my 70-200 f4 since getting a new big lenses. For well used lenses would it be reasonable to get half of the going rate on Amazon?
Keep in mind there are going to be a lot of new lens upgrades that Canon are making. Pricing on those is high, IMO too. But, These new lenses are supposedly better matched for even higher MP image quality. For now, my next lens purchase will be the 70-200 2.8 IS II... but not in any hurry for that yet.
Mark check out Photography On The Net. It's a Canon forum and I've had great results selling stuff there, about 90% of retail is about the going rate for like new stuff. You do need something like 30 posts to access the for sale sections though.
And adding insult to injury, they increased the size of the front element (meaning new filters). I'm lookin to pick up a used 24-70 once the II is available.
That's accurate (MSRP). http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_24_70mm_f_2_8l_ii_usm Maybe there will be a lower street price... eventually.
could be, if they go to something like powershot g1x pixel density on a FF sensor (would be 46MP) Didn't they demonstrate a 100MP APS-C sensor a while back?

Yah, and it's still a rumor list. There's little question we won't know everything after the events canon is holding tomorrow though... SWAG from the china event: Man, I hope it's available soon, not a 6 month lag like the 1dx and d4. Image Unavailable, Please Login
