Do you really need 21mp? 5mp is the smallest size you can select. The camera looks like it has great features and might complement my 20D, but I wonder how much better a 21mp shot would be. I guess you could produce a building sized picture.
Probably wouldn't want to go much bigger than poster sized. Most billboards and larger prints that are digital are from Large format digital backs.
Same size as the 1Ds MKIII at 21MP. Didn't seem like they were ever going to release a 5D successor, but now... Pretty sweet. I may look into getting one.
Not to get too far off track but since we are bringing up MPs. Did I read somewhere that one manufacturer was developing a gb pixel camera or something similar? Did you guys hear about this
I did not. Sounds fishy. You'd pretty much have to be tethered to a computer to handle the file size, so would think.
You mean a giga-pixel? Haven't heard of it. If it's true I would imagine it's just for R&D. That's not something that is very usable.
It was a major player like Sony. I just can't find the info. I'll keep searching. I think it was in development - not for "prime time" yet.
I do seem to remember one of the companies making a rig to mimic some of the DIY stitching stuff that people have done (like: http://www.xrez.com/manifest/xRez_manif.html), but not a single billion pixel exposure.
A single CCD? Wow. Very large form factor or very high pixel density? Or both? I guess they could just take the entire silicon wafer and not cut it into smaller bits
I haven't ever tried printing poster sized... but there are a lot of shots that get cropped and the MP count helps keep them looking good. I have been waiting for this thing to come out for a while, really looking forward to getting it. Gonna have to upgrade a lens to go with the camera, to match my current XTi and 70-200 with the crop factor I'm looking to get the 100-400 to go with the 5D Mk 2
est street price $2,700. man these things are coming down. i paid over 3k for my 5d. time to upgrade.
Shot with the MkII: http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2086&productID=249&articleTypeID=225 That's amazing for a $2,700 camera...! Would anybody here be concerned about the lack of weather protection?
2,700 dollar camera + about 20,000 dollars worth of glass... I'm not. I never ran into issues with my Rebel XT, and I haven't yet run into any issues with the minimal weather sealing on my 40D. Shouldn't really be an issue for me.
Of course, but looking at the individual shots and frames it's amazing for the money! Right - interesting, though, as I see you're doing quite a lot of (very nice) nature photography. I guess only extreme wet weather will be an issue.
The only time I got worried was shooting a waterfall in hawaii that was more-or-less raining on me. I got in a few shots before the lens fogged up. (thanks, btw)
I shoot with Nikon, but I have to admit this camera seems like an amazing piece of work. Full frame with countless other features. Beautiful stuff, but not enough to make me switch.
Funny, the D300/700 was almost enough to make me switch to Nikon (having an assortment of Canon glass that I also use with my film camera is what anchored me). Hopefully this camera will match the ISO performance Nikon is getting.
Wow: Available optionally during Live view mode 1920 x 1080 (16:9) up to 12 mins (Quicktime 1080p H.264; 38.6 Mbits/sec) Now you can record HD video too. I recently picked up an EOS 5D. If I had known this was in the pipeline, I would definitely have held off. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
See post #16 for a pretty amazing sample. Or just go here: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/20/something-very-interesting-is-comingboth-to-this-blog-and-to-our-industry/
Its an amazing camera, I think it will live up to the Nikon if not out do the Nikon. I still love Nikon but I hope Nikon can pull off some of the things Canon pulled off with this camera.
I don't know... I haven't seen a side by side ISO comparison between the 1Ds mk III and the D3. The 5D mk II uses the same sensor as the 1Ds mk III, so if the 1D is better, the 5D has the potential to be better. But if not, I doubt the 5D2 will be. It has the new image proc (digic 4), but I don't see Canon making the 5D2 image quality better than the 1D3. Who knows, though? Edit: I think I want one either way though.
