    There are hundreds to choose from and I am sure others will weigh in on this. To address the issue you are chasing, this is a basic model I would consider:

    Actron OBDII Auto Scanner

    The basic function you are looking for also has Live stream data which gives you feedback from known sensors as well as the ability to view and delete codes.

    That said, I would still borrow a more advanced one from a friend so you can determine if you have still have a connection problem before spending the money.

    The problem with buying a new one is that it is always tempting to get more advanced technology before figuring out what the original problem was (speaking from experience!).

    I use AutoEnginuity which is expensive because it is PC based. It gives the most complete view of BMW (I have 3 BMWs in the driveway) sensors and actuators you can commercially get. It also works great on my 355 because you can save sensor results.
