Been trying to get my timing cover off. There is a sensor in the way that doesn't allow the plate to come up over the studs in the block. I pulled the oil filter to get a better look. There is one wire that comes out the end of it, the wire goes in under the intake manifold and connects in the middle. I can't imagine I have to pull the intake manifold to get to the connection to properly remove this sensor to check the timing? It seems that if I thread the sensor out it will end up twisting and possibly breaking the wire.

Timing cover? Or do you mean valve cover? Front or rear? Might help if you post a picture so we can see what you are talking about.

Follow that wire a little more closely, there is a connector to the harness that lays in the valley. You can just unplug it and spin the sensor off.

You really shouldn't have to remove that sensor.... that's odd.

I thought it was odd too, doesn't make sense that the timing mark access be boxed in. There is only about 3mm between the cover and the sensor, and both studs are longer than that. I couldn't get access to the connection in the valley, may have to use a couple extra long needle nose pliers.

It's a single wire connection. Cut it, do your work and splice it back afterwards. Or better yet, put your own connector in right there where it's accessible.

Another option might be to remove the studs (or maybe just 1 stud which would allow you to spin the cover) using the double-nut method -- just a thought...

Appreciate the input everyone, I think we've found a winner. These cars are know for all the bad connections, I can't see any reason not to add another. I've done this before, but in this case it didn't occur to me, thanks and now I can sleep tonight.

Rick, I used to live in Sac, spent 15 years there and wish I could get back. Thanks again for the suggestion.
