The inner door handle stopped working first, but it would open with outside handle. Today I went to fix it but the outside handle will no longer open it. Handle just pulls like it normally would but door remains locked...hence I can't easily remove the door panel to access the mechanism. Hate to destroy the panel but not seeing another way to access. Thought I would post and listen to any suggestions. tnx

Are you sure you need to have the door open to take it off? My car isn't here, but I seem to recall removing the armrest and the handle then carefully pulling out the clips at the bottom. That might be a difficult, but I would think tools would get in there and it's doable, just more of a pain. Maybe "easily" was the key word. If you haven't taken one apart, usually you loosen the panel around the sides, then it lifts off the lip of the metal liner panels. I haven't removed mine, but one of them gets loose periodically so I have played with it some. I'd double check this if my car were here, but can't happen. I do have a set of plastic pry-bars that I use, they may make a difference because one has a forked end to go around the clips ad also a 90-degree bend at the end, so you don;t have to get too parallel to the door. Good luck!

I've just had the door panels off on my car to do some adjustments on the inside, mine is an 88 3.2, you have to remove a single screw from the jamb side of the door card and then the center card slides out, then there are several screws for the upper and lower cards, and the lower cards are in two pieces, I'm not sure without access to that center screw on the jam side if you'll be able to take that center panel off or not, I would search the form for how to remove the door panel on our cars and it may provide more answers for you.

Can you open the other door to get at it from the inside? Or are you completely locked out of your car?

Thank you both for your answers.
I have removed it previously but it was a few years ago...however, the passenger door side works well and I have looked at it. Yes, the normal way to remove them is to unscrew fasteners along the bottom (2) and on the front of the panel (1) and the one on the side by the door jamb. Unfortunately I can't get to the door jamb or the bottom ones with the door closed... perhaps I'll stop by the body shop and see if those guys have some ideas.... entry and exit through passengers door is HARD. LOL

Just had mine apart to fix the lock last week. I can’t see any other option but to pry out the center panel to access the cable that runs from the interior handle to to latch. It’s held by tabs that slide into sheet metal notches.

I would take a few minutes to undo the one screw and slide out the passenger side center panel to see where the clips are, where to possibly pry, and where the latch cable runs before attempting to pry out the broken drivers side. The leather wrapped aluminum center panel should be repairable when you inevitably have to bend the daylights out of it.

    good luck.

Before you go destructive... you should try the car thief trick and try and catch the relevant lever from the top via the gasket slot. You have the pax side as reference to see where you have to go fishing. You might use an endoscope attached to your phone to see inside the door. Good luck.

Yes. The locking and unlocking mechanism can be heard.

SUCCESS! - THIS WAS THE ANSWER. With the passenger side open, created a flat wire hook that worked on that side and practiced a bit. Switched to locked side and from inside the car was able to hook the cable and open it. Adjusted the mechanism so it now opens from both outside and inside. Life is good. Adjusted passenger side a bit too since it was open.
