I'm redying my seats/interior and am having a devil of a time getting the center console out. Any tricks on getting it free?

I've removed the front coin console, and the center piece of the console (which holds the electronics) is free. I've removed the shifter knob and grate, and unzipped the console around the parking brake.

I just can't seem to get the center console over the shifter and the brake. If I try to push it forward to clear the brake, it runs into the shifter, and if I try to lift it to clear the shifter, the brake and the A/C vents won't let me get it high enough.

Any tricks on how to twist/turn it to get it free and clear?

    TIA

I disconnected the parking brake cable at the caliper on one side (turned the actuating arm with channel locks & unhooked the cable), then I was able to raise the parking park arm high enough to clear both.
There's probably other ways to do it, but it was easy and worked for me.

Just curious, how is the center piece with switches/electronics removed from main console? I thought it was all 1 piece.

Not sure if it's exactly the same as my '78 but it should be close. To get the center panel loose on mine I had to take the ashtray out and remove the two screws underneath. It only has a c-clip that slides over the back end.

To get the console all the way out you take the knob off the shift lever and pull the e-brake up as far as it will go. You might have to pull up very hard on the brake to get it hight enough.

Then the console should slide up and over the shift lever as it slides off the brake lever. Still a tight fit though!!

    now that's clever!

more specifically on the removal, you take out the inner ashtray liner to expose the two screws. When those come out, you then remove the remainder of the ashtray. It's the ashtray bezel holding down the front of the center piece.

It's actually three pieces, at least in my '85. There is the front "coin tray" piece, the main center console which extends from the coin tray to past the brake, and the electronics console, which sits inside of the main center console.

To get the electronics console out, remove the drop in ash tray and find 2 screws in the bottom of the housing. Then remove the shifting grate. You can then slide the electronics console forward a bit and that releases the metal clip at the rear. I pushed mine down so I could remove the cables/controls after the main center console was removed. Taking out the temperature and airflow controls require unscrewing things from the underside which I could not get to without getting the main center console out first.

FWIW, I never could get the center console over the shifter and the brake. I ended up unbolting the brake from the frame and sliding it out.

Hi just taken centre console out of my 308 GTSi had same problem but I undid the 4 bolt on gear lever remote I could then move console sideways and up. Now in progress of re-dyeing all the leather, it's looking v good using Liquid leather a water based product.
