Awesome isnt the word, spending time with 35 Ferraris with a track all to themselves is something truly special, its even better whe you have the opportunity to be a passenger in a very well driven 430 spider.

Let me say right off that the carbon brakes are phenomenal, if anyone is thinking of not taking them, think again, they are perfect for track use and over about 50 laps there was no noticeable deteriation in either brakes pads or discs and the weather was pretty hot.

Cars ranged from 3 Dinos to a 3 brand new 430s and a 575 HGTC and even a Maser QP.

The 430 around the track is simply phenomenal, the way the car sits and way it behaves even when one goes over the limit is simply amazing and when putting the coupe against the spider they both put up identical lap times which I found interesting...

Then there were the 360, most of which has Stradale exhaust fitted, to say they were loud is an understatement, same goes for the 355 with Tubis. And one of my fav cars was there, a 355 spider in red, even today that car looks just so beautiful.

Cherry on this rich cake was seeing an F40, very special, seeing an F40 always makes me think of Mr Ferrari and I think for a few hours today he spirit was with us as we used the cars that bear his name in a way I am sure he would have been proud of.

    Pics to follow.

After 18 years in Canada you get rusty
I know a guy who lives on Clifton 4th beach who has (had?) a 400 Automatic. Also a friend of mine in Joeys gets his 430 next August. I drive a 360 Spider and do 5-6 track days a year

I heard a rumor that under the Black Empowerment Statutes in South Africa, Ferrari owners will be compellled to give a 25.1 % interest in their car to a black person in order to redress the injustice of the Apartheid years, in line with the requirement of all business owners to do the same. How will this affect Ferrari sales in South Africa?

Ek kan ook die taal praat but after being in the UK for 25 years I think I'd fail my taalbond eksamen now!

Which track is that in Cape Town?

Was out there, staying in Camps Bay not long back but sadly in a hired Camry...Totsiens

This comment really made me smile! Excellent example of sarcasm, seems our black empowerment idea have spread throughout the world....Interestingly Ferrari sales seem to be pretty strong in SA, there is an apparent waiting list for the 430 but thats maybe because our total allocation is probably less than the total allocation of ONE dealer in the US...

Track is Killarney, quite a nice track, for those of you that know the track the 430 spider managed 250 km/h down the back straight, will try and find some pics of cars on the track. Must say its really great to know there are some South Africans living abroad that frequent F-Chat!

I remember Killarney, trying to catch the Mortimer Gordini with Van Rooyen's ex Cortina about to lap me and occasionally the late Bobby Olthoff throwing that Galaxy from one side of the track to the other...them was the days! Guys used to run 250 GTOs occasionally against 1600 Zagato Alfas. I think we knew even then that these were classics.

Golden days those.....though they were many, many years before I was around, I have heard people speak in awe of those days. Not sure if you remeber the Ford Capri V8 Perana, I have one of those and in 2000 I was lucky enough to meet the late Bob Olthoff, what a fantastic down to earth guy. Then of course there was David Piper who once drove a 250 GTO from Cape Town to JHB to get to the famous 9 hour race. I can only imagine the sound of that V12 screaming through the Karoo.

It might interest you that the track hasn changed since those golden days, the layout is the same, there are lots of places for spectators to sit and coporates havent taken over.

Going round in the 430 I really couldnt help thinking that I was driving in the wheel tracks of some legendary drivers.

For me and most Ferrari people here one of the highlights is the annual David Piper race weekend, the sight and sound of a 250 LM, the scream of that V12 or the gorgoues 206 Dino or P2...One cant quantify experiences like those.

I do remember the Capri Perana as well as ome of the other hybrids that were around then including the Willy Mesissner Cortinas and the Chatz Alphas one of which was my GTA. I am delighted to ehar that Killarney has not lost its charm but do you happen to know if Hesketh is still in operation in Natal/Kwazulu?

David Piper was a legend in his own time for his efforts and successes in the 9-hour and I recall hanging out in his pit as youngster with his pal Tony Ferguson a predeccessor of John Love who before Jody baby used to dominate the Formula 1 scene in his Ccoper Climax taking on an equally gifted Tony Maggs. What was so amazing about that era was just how sophisticated the scene was as compared with its commercial superiors in Europe and the US. In fact as I now get the chance to compare the US sports car and saloon car scene circa 1960/70 with that of SA, I see a positively backward environment being celebrated to day in the US with respect to that era.

Enjoy your car - perhaps when I am next in SA we can meet for a Castle or sommige iets.

    Very nice.
However I think I'd potentially be too worried to drive half of those cars in Cape town... are the levels of car-jacking in Sth Africa really that bad?
