After reading a number of posts I am somewhat concerned about engine compartment heat causing issue. My setup is fabspeed headers (uncoated) and test pipes with gothspeed exhaust. I have the challenge grill, just not installed yet. I live in Maryland, once the grill is installed will there still be to much heat from the uncoated headers that I should get the Capristo heat blankets or will I be ok without them. I drive the car a couple of times a week and do a bit of local driving. Also the fabspreed heat shields that come with the headers are installed.

    Hi Neil,

You should be fine with your current setup, but the challenge grille will also help reduce temps. Since your system has our headers and test pipes, your engine bay should be significantly cooler than the factory setup. I would also recommend against using the header blankets as they will unnecessarily hold heat within the header tubing which could weaken the construction. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Are the stock heat shields responsible for the failures in the stock headers then?

I have the Capristo heat shield installed on my car with the ceramic coated Fabspeed headers. I have only had the shields for a week and will see what happens to the headers. I can tell you that heat coming out of the engine compartment is drastically reduced. How this will effect the headers time will tell. If you do alot of city stop and go driving like I do, these are a must. The exhaust gets very hot and just cooks anything around it. I had the Fabspeed heat shields and my alternator was baked after one year of city driving. If you are just doing highway driving and driving the car occasionally, you are most likely ok without the Capristo heat shields.

They could be a contributing factor, but I doubt the heat shields are the only reason they fail.

I certainly hope you don't have any issues, but we have never tested our headers with the blankets, so I don't really know what to expect. I have been told by a heat wrap expert that you shouldn't wrap a ceramic coated header, but I have no data to support that other than the fact that he builds heat wrapping for IRL cars and other race and street cars.

I would recommend removing the blankets after a while and doing a visual inspection (I know it is tight in there, but it is still worth doing). Let me know how it goes. Thanks.

    I have a question and a comment:

    - Who sells the capristo blankets and how do they look?

    - I have wrapped a great many ceramic headers in my day and had not one issue - in fact, I think it may be the best way to keep the heat inside the pipes.

Here's how they're fastened. The blanket kit comes with this crimp-on brackets which have wire loops in them. Wire is supplied as well. Simply fold the edges of the blankets over by 1", slip on a bracket, then crimp into place using pliers so that the bracket teeth grip onto the blanket.

I'll take some REAL measurements before and after installation, but I was goofing around tonight after wrapping the other header and here are results. All I did was use my charcoal lighter and burned inside one of the tubes for about 5 minutes. Then I measured the outside of the tube at the flange where the blanket doesn't cover (approximately 1/25" of exposed header), then barely moved over to where the blanket coverage starts.

    88df at the blanket's edge
130df immediately off of the blanket and onto the metal

Eager to get some real-use measurements. Like I mentioned before, however.... this has to be better than nothing.
