    hi everybody

the valve on my capristo muffler won't open. i tried a combo of high RPM (up to 7K) and heavy throttle during a 40 minute drive, but nothing. so it appears it is stuck closed. is there a remedy for this that i can do at home?

    thanks!
    john

Is it a Capristo valve & exhaust system, or a standard 355 valve being used with a Capristo exhaust system?
If a standard valve. Starting with a simple one first. Have you checked that the little vacuum pipe to the valve has not rubbed a hole in it, against the heat shield. This can happen, thus dos not allow any suction in the pipe to open the valve.

Ok brother, i am sure there will be a few more ideas on here very soon. I have no experience with the Capristo valves only the exhausts. Good luck:)

Is this your Capristo bypass valve?
    http://www.capristoexhaust.us/Capristo-Uprated-Bypass-Valve-for-355-p/355%20bypass%20valve.htm

Did you just install it? It is supposed to fail in the open position (if there is a vacuum leak) (as opposed to the ferrari bypass valve that fails in the closed position) which is just opposite from your problem. I have not installed this bypass valve, so I can not be much help, but call Taurino Racing (the official US distributor for Capristo) at 770-536-1744 and ask to speak with tech support. They should be able to help.

btw, do you have a remote control with a key fob for the bypass valve? If you do, this might be the problem and I might be able to help as when I first installed it, my bypass valve was closed 100% of the time and would not open, until I called them and was told what setting to change. It now works great.

ok thanks guys. yes, skusa, that looks like it. when i bought the bypass valve, i didn't get a remote with it. i bought it through my shop and they installed it about 2 months ago. it seemed to be working fine until the cold weather hit. looks like the best thing to do is call the shop.

As others have said, the valve should fail in the open position......if its stuck closed then its shot.
But if the picture above is the same as your bypass valve then you have the early version of the valve. Capristo found they were having heat related failures of the valve and later versions had a large metal heat shield around the base of the valve. This should be covered by warranty.

    Hi,

I have just installed a new Capristo bypass valve in my 1998 5.2 355 and seem to have the same problem from the getgo.

The diaphragm is vacumed "closed" when I star the engine

I have not had the car out of the garage, just run the engine, but when I switch everything off, the valve stays closed

Can anyone answer the following questions?

    a) Is the solenoid valve a 2 or a 3 position valve?
    b) After runing the engine and switching off, should the bypass stay closed (vacume on) or should it switch to vent position and await startup? Assuming that the system won't work with the car in neutral, again I assume that the solenoid won't won't get a signal from the ECU.
    c) If I turn the electrics off, should the bypass stay closed or open up?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely?

    hallo John,
have you exchanged the electronic valve?
when the exhaust valve is installed correctly then it is only open when the engine is off. when the engine is started closed.
then opens automatically when you drive.

for this function it is necessary to replace the electric valve. We always deliver our gas valve with electronic valve.
    did you get that?

can you send me a picture as you have connected the electronic valve?

    Ciao Squibletts,

if you stop the engine again, it is normal that the Valve remains closed. It has to do with the vacuum still remains, you have two small black / white one-way valves (standard) to ensure that the vacuum is not lost, so the exhaust valve remains closed. opens automatically when you drive fast.

will open the exhaust valve after the stop of the engine then it is a sign that the one-way valves are leaking, but is not bad, the vacuum formed immediately when you start the engine
    Ciao Antonio

    hi Antonio

thank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiry. i am not very technical and was hoping for an easy fix. i bought my bypass valve through Competizione & Sports Cars and they installed it. i also bought a capristo stage 3 muffler from Competizione. i don't know if i got the electronic valve. i think the remedy for this situation is beyond my ability to fix. :) i am taking the car to the shop when weather is better. :)

thanks for the many compliments, you must know that each exhaust system for me is like a child to grow I see. each component goes through my hands but I'm only human and can make mistakes, so if you have a problem any calls us or send us an e-mail, we will help as best as you can.
I call Riccardo, then we are sure that he has the built-in solenoid valve.

    Ciao Antonio

for anyone interested in the resolution, it was not the valve, but the gas pedal bearings. pedal didn't go down far enough. :)

I guess the car not reving past 4,000RPM would have been a clue:D I wonder how he never noticed the engine revs being so low?
