I want to get a new daily driver, but in doing so the stereo needs to be about the same level in sound quality, depth, etc. I currently have the stock HK Logic 7 system in my range rover. I love it. It adds an echo to songs that makes them sound awesome. Its clear, and deep. I really love the echo. Did I mention that? Anyway, I want to make a custom system that is is about this level for my new car. Any idea where to start? I looked at the alpine website...it wasnt working for me.
Some brands that have a really good high end reputation are Alpine, Eclipse (head units), and Boston Acoustics and MB Quart for speakers. I've been out of car audio too long to know who is good with amps these days. Go to carreview.com and they have a whole area devoted to real people dropping opinions on specific car audio products. Or just get a Lexus with the Mark Levinson sound system, or 2004 Acura TL with its digital system. You won't be disappointed
The key to a good high end system will be not only the equipment but the installation. If you are willing to spend enough, anything can be done. You may want to ask around at some of the local high end home stereo shops to see who is known for mobile audio in the area. The audiophile community is a small one with a few good shops that are usually well known. Does the new car you are getting not have an optional high end audio option?
http://goodmanradio.com/ McIntosh, MB Quartz speakers. Lots of others!! Truth is a good installation makes the difference. Check out Gary's website. Yes, he's a friend of mine, but, he has also done tons of Fcars as original installs in the 70's to present, and did a fabulous job on every car I've ever modded the radio on. They are the best. Not cheap, but the best that I've ever dealt with. Visit the site. Might even consider taking a trip to see him, it's only a couple of hours for you. I'll meet you there and buy you lunch.
Thank you Dave for the offer! I am under talks to get the car at the moment. When (and hopefully not if) it all gets through, I will be in touch.
I have a co-worker who's big into mobile audio and he swears by McIntosh amps. He has a custom installation in his Acura using to McIntosh amps and I believe an Alpine head unit. I'll get back to you in this topic regarding his speaker choice. Anyway, I've heard the system and it's very good, easily blows my MB's stock Bose system away.
If you REALLY want some sweet sound in your car, keep your eye out for some old B&W automotive units (they haven't made car speakers in ages, but when they did, they were FANTASTIC) and mate them with some Milbert automotive tube amps
