    I have been lurking on here for several months looking to learn as much as possible about these stunning machines before moving from (or potentially adding to) my current 997. I have been scanning pricing and going to see a few in person trying to gauge what exactly I am looking for a car. I have narrowed the search to a 2000 6 speed (23,000 KM / 89K Cdn) vs a 2004 F1 (18,000KM / 97K). Both are Red/Tab options are similar (The 2000 has a tubi and red calipers) with the latter being offered by a Ferrari dealership and one owner. The 2000 had 3 owners at an independant but both cars were cared for equally all service is up to date on both.

    I suspect people will be surprised that I am not drawn to either the 6 speed or the F1 but I an torn. I have not seen the F1 in person yet, but have had dozens of pictures emailed over. I understand the 6 speed is less maintenance and some of the percieved issues with the F1 but if everything else is equal would the 04 represent a better car being newer with the F1 option (and upgrade ECU) and from a dealer? I will PPI both

    Additionally, I have the clutch measurement on the F1 but am under the impression that you can't easily get a clutch measurement on the 6 Speed. Is that correct?

    the SD2 can tell you clutch wear on the F1 but not on the 6-speed. But be advised that the clutch wear from the SD2 is more of a "guideline" then actual wear, it can be manipulated.

    Maintenance wise the F1 will cost more but for most people the difference will be minor, since these cars are not driven as much as they should be. The F1 clutch will not last quite as long as the 6-speed clutch but its not a big deal, maybe 10,000 miles less. For me the big difference is that I can't do the F1 clutch myself due to not having a SD2, but I could have done a 6-speed clutch myself bringing the labor costs way down. When hunting, I actually had no preference and bought the first car I liked, it happened to be F1 and I am really happy it is.

    8K will buy you 3 MY's and 5.000KM. (I'd prefer less owners for resale perception. Shouldn't affect technical condition of the car.)
    Buying from an F-dealer will allow you to negotiate/buy a Ferrari Power Warranty on engine/gearbox/diff for peace off mind.(this excludes clutch wear;)) (Last warranty module for cars 8 to 10 year old.)

    Manual or F1 should be a personal decision based on preference or experience you are looking for.
    I recently upgraded from a Ferrari 328 GTS (manual off course) to a 2004 360 Spider F1 and specifically chose the F1 to have a 100% different driving experience.

    I would drive both to know what suits your driving style/preference best.

    Just my 2ct.

    J- You cannot get a reading on clutch wear with an SD2 for three pedal cars, but a tech can do a visual inspection of clutch wear through the inspection ports with a borescope tool. Not a bad idea for F1 cars either.

    Can you see the state of the flywheel from this inspection port? (on an F1 model)

    When changing an F1 clutch it would be useful to know beforehand if the flywheel is damaged/can be repaired/needs changing...

    Taz, is that a big deal? I asked about getting a reading from indy where they car is located, got a bit of pushback was told 'they would never sell a car that needed a clutch'. They are very very highly regarded here and elsewhere so I am a little torn. I will do a PPI but given the weather here a PPI this time of year wont be cheap so I was just looking for a little piece of mind on the clutch before jumping in.
