Wow! That is so "busy" I wonder how it would fare in aerodynamics testing. Has probably gone beyond the limit of diminishing returns.

What's that? The point of increasing deficits for their efforts? :)

    All the best,

I doubt it. Look at the very complex shapes on the front wing of a current F1 car for the Belgium race.

here is a wing mclaren used last year note the tiny tabs that are circled. They would not be there if they didn't make a difference. They make a different wing for each race track they visit...

Amazing. This genera of aerodynamics must be similar to the principle of dimples on a golf ball. Totally opposed to streamlining as applied to aircraft and Bonneville salt flats cars.

This would not be about streamlining (low drag). This is about downforce and flow control. Even on aircraft you will find flow control with strakes, localized appendages on some leading edges, vortilons on the wings and winglets.

This is one of my biggest, but not THE biggest, problem with designers -- trying to hard. If you took this and cleaned it up, not so much in your face, it might look cool.

Just to show I'm not just a complete curmudgeon, I'm impressed. Something from GM that is not over the top. Really nailed it.

I'm impressed. Way cleaner and less busy than the 'intense emotion' of the other day........As a design, I think it's pretty successful......as a >300 mph car, meh......
Any one know who the stylist is? (probably not Mr. Hennessey; he's too busy defending himself against unhappy clients;)......) Does look to have a bit of 488/FXX/etc in its dna.......

I was just going to say thats about as generic-mid-engine-sports-car as I can possibly imagine. Its like they just cut and paste

I'll bet if they were all red and in a lineup, they would all be ID'ed as Ferraris....have we arrived at 'generic' now? (I guess Jerry agrees.......:p

Another good example of the huge amount of 'dead space' between the door and the rear tire that the designer has to fill up with something. The contrast color around the side vent plus the strong rocker panel design helps with that...

The 458 guys however resisted the urge to ‘fill the space’ :)

There are several seminars and trade shows over the next month or so in the Detroit area about AI, machine learning, voice recognition and related topics, leading up to the NAIAS 2018 in January.

A lot of the news that will come out of NAIAS 2018 will be about autonomous vehicles and technological advances made within the last year.

This isn't a matter of "if" but "when". And how will autonomy affect automobile design in the future?

IMHO, the Audi R8 is the quintessential example of filling the void with "something" that in the case of the Audi looks like an unpainted body repair panel.:(

Never did like that ‘filler panel’ on the Audi, but to each his own

There are so many unknowns regarding autonomy & it’s influence on vehicle design.
Ownership, ride sharing, brand character, just begin to scratch the surface. What most designers don’t want are anonymous Barcaloungers on wheels

Image Unavailable, Please Login Just received this book recently, and I can say I highly recommend it. If you have any interest in the process of how a car is designed, this book will appeal to you. It doesn’t teach you how to sketch or draw cars, but it deals with how a vehicle comes to fruition through the design process. In the entire history of the automobile there are very few books dealing with the design aspect. This is the first and only book i’m aware of that talks about the actual design process and all the steps needed to get a design completed. It’s written by a former Chrysler, Mazda, Ford Designer, now professor at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in LA. I have no affiliation with the book, but I recommend it without reservation. A bit pricey at $60, but IMO, worth it. 222 pages, softcover, Amazon. There just aren’t any books on the subject.
If you have a passion for automotive design, and want to know how it all happens, this is the real deal. There are interviews with several famous/influential designers, one of whom is a FChat member.

When the 458 came out I wasnt a huge fan. I felt it was a good looking car but didnt love it. Believe it or not i felt it was a bit 'busy'...lol

However, seeing whats coming out these days makes the 458 look spectacular. I just feel exotic styling gets worse and worse every generation.

    I hear ya, although I can't imagine a description of a 458 as being 'busy' :)
the 458 is probably my favorite contemporary Ferrari........and this coming from a 488 owner , HOWEVER, the 458 is a 'prettier, sweeter' execution, where the 488 is more 'in your face' aggressive. I love the 488 as well, but the 458 is a 'cleaner' execution. I actually like the space between the rear edge of the door and the rear tire. It's unlike any other mid engined car at the moment. Anxious to see what Corvette does with that 1/4 panel.

I think much of what the book deals with will apply to your business as well. I'll be anxious to hear your thoughts when you have an opportunity.
