This morning from our balcony in Rome - For comparison in size, the car in front is a Fiat Panda which is on the same platform as the 500. 'Moby Dark' is an M-B 5 door sports coupe SUV thingie which is every bit as large as it appears... Remember when the Euros used to complain about the girth & weight of American cars??? Me too - sigh... Image Unavailable, Please Login

Today I had the honor of being a judge at the annual Eyes on Design Concours in Grosse Pointe, MI.at the Edsel Ford Estate. Unlike most other Concours, this show is judged strictly on design. No one cares if you have the correct muffler clamp, or battery hold down strap, it's a show all about design. As such, the judges are currently working or retired designers from around the world. It's a heady group of car designers past and present. the class I judged was 'Concept cars you can drive to work.' Some awesome cars in the class made the decision process difficult. First place went to the Blue Ghia Chrysler and second place went to the Cadillac Eldo Broughm. One class that was a real jaw dropper were the Shadow CanAm cars. You talk about innovative Engineering & Industrial Design! 10" wheels for those anti-big wheel individuals. Some of those Exner/Ghia cars were spectacular. It was a shame that Chrysler did not put any of them in to limited production for the US market. They were way ahead of their time. One thing they do show (along with many of the Motorama cars) is how far ahead of current in-production styles the designers are capable of being.
The interesting thing for me yesterday was looking at that Ghia Chrysler from 1953 and right next to it was a 1953 Cadillac. Same year! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Throw in the Buick and Olds and it was a real eye opener.
It is at best a lukewarm OK. Could be lots better and far more integrated. I might put it as a sketch that needed more development.
What Maserati? When I scrolled down, I first thought that grayish-white vehicle was a new C8 with some fancy body kit and kept scrolling down the page.
I so rarely see that Hudson that it always takes a minute to recognize it! This also seems a good place to post a couple of photos of a Boano Chrysler 300 B that's coming op for auction. It looks surprisingly lythe for its size. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
When I saw the photos of the original Shadow on its Austin Mini wheels, my first thought was that Russell Brockbank was having us on... I really love the irony of the red car's enormous wing when the whole point of the exercise was 'low drag' - LOL!
I must admit the other 2 judges and I had a debate over the design of the Hudson. In the end we passed on that car. But it sure makes a ‘statement’ Image Unavailable, Please Login
