Well, i'm paying Continental another visit on Wednesday.... While driving home on sunday after the Oak street fun, I had NO A/C and it was HOT out, i was dieing, especially my 2 hr. drive home.... I hope they can track down the problem this time, i need that A/C!!!! Then after i got home, was unloading stuff from the trunk area, went to close it and i snagged the stupid antenna and bent it over... Needless to say, that didn't make me too happy... Just ordered a new one from antennaworld... While at Continental, i will have them flush my Brake Fluid and do another Oil change and check a few other items..... Fun.....Fun......Fun....... Too bad Continental doesn't have any 360's as loaner cars while your car is in the shop, like what a got from my Pontiac dealer years ago....
Ever thought about re-charging it yourself? I just posted a thread in the tech section to see if this will work on a 308 (I have no idea if you can) You can get a can for $2 at the parts store. If it holds for a month or 2, its worth the $2, as opposed to the multi $100s its gonna cost you.
I feel your pain Tod. Mine is probably soon going in for some checks as well. My A/C works, but freezes over after an hour and then is no good anymore. Sucks in this weather. Any dealer, that offers a 360 as a loaner would get my car. Heck, they could keep it.
FYI Kim went and got certified and can buy all the different kinds of refrigerant... she could recharge it for you... very affordably I'm sure... she has a bunch of R12 in my garage Chelle
I guess that I am fortunate that my Air Cond. in my 308 is super cold, and has no problems. But,you have to remember to run it alittle while ALL year long to keep all of the seals fresh and lubricated. Otherwise they dry out and cause leaks which can lead to other,$$$$ damage.
Mike, I think that $2 cost is for that new stuff, R134??? not the R-12 which is what my system is running, i heard it's about $55/Lb for that stuff, Heck, i remember when you can get a 1Lb can at Kmart for 99 cents... They were suppose to have fixed it a few months ago during my 30K service, they said it was fix and should not be a problem anymore, Hmmmm???? We'll see what they have to say this time...
TELL ME ABOUT IT !!! Every time i drive now, i have to take a shower, i am ussually drenched it's so HOT.... :\~
I had a similar problem with mine. Turned out the thermostat switch was bad. Jumpered past it and it's running full cold all the time now. Have them jumper past the switch (with a fuse!) and see if it turns the AC back on. I'm chasing down the replacement, it turns out to be a GE soda machine part. DGS helped me with that.
Thanks Chelle, I will remember that, first want Continental to try and get this system working, i think three is a pin hole leak somewhere, looking through all the past service records from the previous owner, show a number of times he got the system worked on... Yes, the car sat for a year or two at a different number of times from 1988 to 2003, when i bought it...
Well, just found out that they think my A/C compressor seized up, the A/C belt was melted off. Will know more tomorrow, they are in the process now of checking the system.... Also, I had given them a B253 Baldwin Oil Filter to put on for the oil change and they told me that that specific one doesn't have a stand pipe and they don't want to put it on, they will be putting on a UFI filter instead. What GIVES with that????????? From reading a million threads in this board, everyone raved about that B253 Baldwin filter, i went out and bought 6 of em, now they are no good???? Hmmmm????? Well, that sucks....
$55/lb??? (R12) Chelle, is this right??? how much do you have to put in??? Is the R12 what I need in an 84QV?? I'd love a "cheap" fix for my non functioning A/C, figured if a recharge lasted a few months, fine with me! On a 20 y/o car, how often would it need to be recharged, assuming it was in good working order? Mine is going to LFSC because I flunked the emissions testing... maybe I'll have 'em eyeball the A/C.
Unless your A/C has been converted to R134A, you have R12 in the system. If you don't want to convert, $55/lb is a good price. I'll be willing pay Kim that price anytime. If you switch to R134A, the efficiency of the A/C will be diminished in most early F-cars; and the 3x8s were never known for A/C comfort. Also, I keep telling you guys, take your car to my guy Ed.....he'll save you money......though you won't get any R12 from him. If you can supply it, he'll install it. And no, I have no monetary gain to be had if you use Ed.
Who is Ed? and where is he? I'd like to talk to him about the A/C, find out how much a conversion would be.
Well Kim pays a tiny fraction of $55/lb : ) and yes it's legal.. I'm sure she'd be willing to just get the R12 for you to do yourself if you wanted to I'll talk to her today about it Chelle
Probably true. Unfortunately. I'm actually changing my outfit to some white pants and shirt for hot driving days. That sun cooks you alive through the windshield.
I printed out the spec for the Baldwin Filter, it was Gary that told me that. I will show him the spec when i go there, plus someone said to have him look in the filter with a flashlight, you will see the standpipe. I hope i can get more than warm air coming out of the A/C in this car, i would hate to have it in storage for the summer time too. I am starting to see why these cars don't have a lot of miles on them, it's starting to make sense now.... hmmmm.....
Ed's Affordable Automotive Repair 421 S. Vermont Palatine IL Phone 847-934-6111 Ed's wife Patty will probably answer. Tell her Skip sent you.
There isn't a specific time interval, it depends on how tight the system is. One of my cars is an 81' and has never needed a recharge. The A/C is still ice cold. On another car, I was charging the system every year until the compressor seized. That was 5 yrs. ago. A new compressor was put on, and it hasn't needed a recharge yet.
Well...... Just heard....... My compressor and the compressor clutch is SHOT! They were able to find a York compressor but are still looking for a A/C clutch. The system still had a full charge, so no leak in the system. Continental is trying to find a clutch on the outside, rather than from Ferrari to save me a few bucks. They already found a compressor for $400 as compared to a Ferrari one for about $2000... HAH! GULP.... I know, i could have probably gone elsewhere and got it cheaper, oh well, i was figuring it might have been something referring back to the 30K they did...
LOL! It's almost like having a spoiler on the back of a 3x8 car.... They check that kind of stuff??? Then having an oil filter other than a UFI would a point detuction also??? HAH!
It's still a York compressor, it's just not comming in that yellow $1,500 box that says Ferrari on it... HAH!
Only in very serious concours like at the Brakers or Pebble Beach. They also check every function of your car to make sure it all works. A 308 with a wing wouldn't even be allowed on the holy lawn, let alone judged.
