    I'm travelling to Melbourne, and wondering if any locals know where specific a 23year old could hire a car, without a credit card. (one to two days the car will be needed for).

    PS: If anyone is going to be a smart ass and suggest, Avis/Hertz etc, I appreciate your advice.

    Even rent-a-bomb need a credit card

    But we do have a marvellous public transport network if youre not in a hurry to get anywhere on time.

    At least there are some youngsters who are smart. No credit card means no over spending.

    I think you can pay cash, you just have to put down a bond. I would still call Avis/Hetz.

    I am sure if they can't help they will be able to point you in the right direction.

    I will give them a call tomorrow morning. I only used my credit card for fuel/uni purchases, but I always paid it off immediately, so I saw little reason to have one. It's just a temptation sitting in your back pocket.

    Now that's an idea.. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll see what else I can dig up.

    AVIS/Hertz need 4 days notice if you don' thave credit card and they do a cehck on you and you have to put down a $3000 bond + pay all upfront all in cash.

    If you want to hire something special go to www.mscr.com.au
    They'll do without credit card if you put the bond down in cash.
