My younger brother was taking a hard turn and his brakes locked up
and he smashed his rims against a curb...

he says he will pay for the damage

or should we have insurance pay it

    the damage was 2400 dollars

    what do you guys think?

    under the sea!
do the rims have to be replaced?

can they be sent for refinishing?

how bad is the damage? (i'm assuming bad because of $2400)

what's your deductible? how old is he? etc etc

lots of factors... but i'd really think it through, for coverage on the wheels you don't want to land up taking a bath on the hiked insurance rates...

If they've already reported the incident to the insurance company, then it's already on the record, whether they pay the claim or not.

Might as well have them pay the claim.

If it's been at all mentioned to the insurance company, then you can be assured that it's on record. There's no reason not to make a claim at this point.

I agree. What concerns me is the comment that it will not raise premiums. Who did they talk to at the insurance company? If they spoke to the claims department, then that isn't really appropriate for them to comment on. If they spoke to the underwriting / production department then you may be safer on the premium issue. However, I would expect to be charged for an at fault accident with $2400 damage. That way if it doesn't happen you will be very happy.

As stated by FD, if it was reported to the claims department, it is already on your loss history, whether they make a payment or not, so you might as well use the coverage.

Many would save a lot of premium dollars with a higher deductible. I always ask my clients what they would pay themselves before they would turn it into the carrier. It's often a very high number. Lots of us are running around with $250 deductibles when we wouldn't turn in anything under $2,500! Tell your agent or carrier that you want a higher deductible! Some carriers, however, don't give much credit for taking a higher deductible, so ask your agent to look around.

To be clear, my post above was not intended for BMWM3 relative to this accident. It was intended for anyone looking at purchasing insurance of any kind in the future. I thought that this issue had been settled. When you discuss a claim with your agent, it has been reported to the carrier....if your agent is, in fact, an agent of the insurance company. By definition, notice to the agent is notice to the company.

but we already tried for a higher deductible

    didn't make much difference
