    Hi,

My recent purchase a 2010 California with 4000 miles on the clock is a very nice car but I find that if I am in, say, 3rd gear at around 3000 rpm it feels very hesitant. An example could be in a 30 mph limit with the engine at 3000 it does not feel nearly as smooth as my manual 430 in the same situation. I find that the accelerator pedal is incredibly sensitive to any inputs and it can result in a jerky ride. It seems to be most comfortable if it gets into 7th. as soon as possible.

Also, sometimes, when changing from 1st to 2nd under quick acceleration there is quite a bang from the exhaust. It reminds me of my first 911 bought back in 1978 which quite often acted as a flame thrower! At night the whole road behind the car would light up: quite entertaining!

Although 3 years old it has been used very little. The first owner collected it from the factory and drove it home which must have accounted for half its mileage and I wonder if the injectors, or whatever, are gummed up as it was not used enough.

Finally, the sat nav lookes like something from Windows 98! is it possible to upgrade the software to have it looking like a California 30. Before this car which came from the New Forest I had a blue California 30 from Scotland. It drove really nicely but it was not an honest car and was returned! Say no more or the angry Scotsman will be after me!

    Thank you!

The change from 1st to 2nd bang is pretty normal, I call it a Kapowww. The Sport mode makes the accelerator pretty sensitive, try the Comfort mode and see if it is a bunch better. If so then all is well. I will have to play with mine at 3K in third gear and see what happens to tell you if there is any problem.

There are a lot of gripes on the boards about the nav, but it should work. For quite a while I had trouble with Sirius cutting out when the car was pointed in certain directions. I think their satellite was down in power for some time, and the antenna in the Cali is crap too, the combination caused it to cut out. It works great today so I think the power is back full from the satellite.

Mine had the hesitation/ sensitive throttle but it seems cured now, I wonder if it was one of the updates that did it.

As said gearchange bang is normal, indeed it's designed in to make the experience more dramatic, IIRC it's achieved by cutting the ignition creating an momentary misfire

You can upgrade the maps but not sure if that includes the system, my car is in for a service with Maranello's and I've asked for the upgrade price, I'll let you know what transpires.

ditto what Rick said. the hesitant sensation or jerkiness is something I find annoying as well on my 2012. this is attributed to Sport mode. dial back to Comfort and it should disappear.

Not mine. Tried it today. No problem in Comfort or Sport. I suggest you get your car checked out. It can be jerky in Sport under some conditions, like trying to creep along in heavy traffic, but not 3rd gear from 3000 RPM.

Thank you for replies so far!

A couple of years ago I sold a Renault 10 which I had had for 15 years and kept the plate, XOY 543 H, which I then put on a Carver One. The Carver had a mechanical failure and was wriiten off but I kept the plate and it went on the California. On Thursday, on the way home from my son's school ..... crunch! Is the plate cursed? Whatever, I shall never use it again!

We were in a line of traffic and they all stopped. At that exact moment I had looked down at the heater to see if it was on full. When I looked up it was too late.

It has gone off to Bodytechnics in Slough and I am waiting for the bad news. The airbags didn't go off and nobody was injured but the roof was down on the car and I am not sure what damage has been done. Both front wings have moved back towards the scuttle, the gaps between the doors and both front and back wings have closed up and it seems that the bootlid, AKA trunk, is now closer to the rear bumper & wings.

Do I look forward to its return or go shopping for another?

WOW! Seeing that brought a tear to my eye. But, most importantly, you and your son are uninjured. We often tout the performance of our car's engines or the beauty of their design, but the safety features are what really count when a situation like this arises.

Your description of the damage tells more of a story than the picture. It seems the force of the crash was absorbed (likely as designed) through the car all the way to the back. Personally, I feel a good shop will be able to sort everything out. However, it may never be factory-perfect.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Benj, I am so sorry to learn of your misfortune. Given your recent bad luck associated with the plate, I would switch to a new one if only to avoid being reminded.

From your descriptions, the collision seems to have been quite heavy. There's also possible issues with alignment and new paint. Given the nature of the damages and the car's value, your insurer will definitely repair it but it will never be the same as before. Even with "perfect repairs" you will wonder about every noise or unexpected behaviour from a repaired car. Like the license plate, if you want to put it all behind you, it's better to start fresh. That's what I would do.

However, always look on the bright side, no one was hurt and you obviously have the means to start fresh. Let us know if we can help.

OP, did you mean hesitation (as pressing the throttle and having a delayed reaction), or surging (car 'hunting' back and forth with a steady throttle at certain rpm/gear)? I've experienced the latter, but not the former. And it's typically due to part-throttle lean conditions, thanks to the EPA.

Benji, sorry to see your car like that. It's not going to be totaled, but I wouldn't want to keep it after it's repaired. I bet it has a lot more damage than it's evident. But wait until it's fixed and then make a decision. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised :D. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Your health is most important the car can be replaced. I have no problem with hesitation in 3rd gear I always drive in sport.

I noticed in my 12 California the same thing, i believe its because of Sport Mode with the Magneride, makes for rough ride in city, and jerky throttle at city speeds, I think to use Sport Mode, you need to be driving that car, in the throttle off the throttle, 30% to 100%

You might also want to check the spark plugs. It's not good to use these cars to commute in heavy traffic. They're simply not designed for that type of (urban) service so it's much better to use a beater or daily driver for that type of driving and just use your Ferrari for fun drives or at least avoid short slow drives with them.

If your spark plugs are clogged from inadequate driving it will also cause hesitation or jerky throttle response. You can trying cleaning them with a proper spark plug cleaner. Check elsewhere on the forum for a discussion on that topic.

What happened with your Cali after the accident?

Did you keep it or sell it?
