Yesterday, wifey wanted to take a ride to Galveston/Texas City area which is about a 100 mile trip for me. Being clear and sunny with temps in the mid 80's and low (for Texas) humidity, I figure I'd take advantage of this ONE day and I crank up the little Modena.

So we head out and 80 miles in, I start to panic. I look down and fear sets in...not speed related, God no! I see that I'm now sitting at 49,980 miles. Quickly, I look for a place to pull over for I know it's only a matter of time before SHTF. Before I am able to get off the Fred Hartman Bridge, I look ahead and all I see on the downside of the bridge is RAIN....OMG....It's like a hurricane! Oh damn. Without thinking, I pull over to the shoulder and shut the car down right at 49,999 miles. So now, the car is going to fail mechanically, and it's gonna melt on top of that. Just my luck! At least it won't burst into flames.

Well, As I'm sitting on the side of the downhill side of the bridge, I begin to ponder my options. Do I attempt to start it again? Hell no...and risk some Stargate spinning thing as I hit 50,000 miles. Nope...not gonna happen. As I ponder my options, the rain hits...and oh boy does it hit. Even though the brakes are outstanding on this car (for a 20 year old car that is), the parking brakes are crap, barely being able to hold the car on flat ground. Now after one rotor gets dusted with sprinkles, the car starts to roll and it keeps rolling until it happens.

    50,000 miles. Oh damn.

Not sure what to do now. Car is pretty much ruined. 50,000 miles...that's like 350,000 miles in Dog! On top of that, it got wet. Not just any kind of wetness, but Houston rain wet. Thought about calling an enclosed trailer to pick it up so it wouldn't melt anymore. It's already ruined so it's not that I am trying to save it, but I don't want any of the melted Ferrari spooge to get on the road or other cars. I mean, I already am looking at replacing the car now. I surely don't want any claims for spooge covered car cleanup!

Apparently you did not get the memo 40,000 miles ago that any/all Ferrari's immediately are worthless after 10,000 miles - I am very sorry you have had to endure the painful additional 40,000 miles as it sounds like each one has been terrible - I think the ONLY option you have is to take advantage of a kind soul like me who will alleviate you of any additional pain, inevitable tow bills, perhaps life-endangering failures etc. because let's face it - EVERY MILE was a risk after 10,000 so your have definitely pushed your luck.

I am a philanthropist and want to help out a fellow Ferrari owner so will try to scrape up $30K or so to take this off your hands - watch for a PM.

Scott, thank you for your kind offer but now that I know that I have been blessed this long, I wouldn't feel right selling it. To me, that would be taking advantage of someone which is against my nature. After you told me how lucky I have been, I have decided to go back to my roots and remove all the troublesome components and just leave it as a shell. Luckly, a friend of mine just totaled his pristine Shelby Mustang and he is willing to donate the powertrain for the protection of those around me. So, coming soon to concourse near you will be a Coyote powered Modena complete with a Brono badge replacing that prancing pony on the challenge grill. I will give you first dibs on the Cavallino from the rear panel though.

This is one of the saddest stories I have read on FC in 15 years!

Discipline yourself and come to reality.

Sell the car ASAP for your own welfare!!!

Awesome!! Can't wait to see it! The Bronco horse will look tons better than the pesky Cavallino - which no-doubt is all rusted and ugly anyhow given the miles on your Modena - You might consider working the Mustang horse in to the mix as well - I don't know if your worn-out Modena has Scuderia shields or not but if it does those are probably falling off by now so maybe a nice set of custom ones that incorporate the Mustang Horse and Shelby snake with a blue oval background and just screw them into the factory holes - should look awesome.

Let me know what you are asking for the Cavallino - I have 46K on my 1995 355 GTS so it, too will be going to the junk heap soon but might be able to use the Cavallino.

    Cheers :)

I heard on of the charity programs is looking for a car!!!
This way you can deduct the full value and unload her before anyone is wiser...
Of course, consult with your tax advisor and attorney before such execution - I am neither but can play one on TV

Ha funny stuff, but sad too that people think Ferrari's are done after such few miles. Screw that, I'm driving mine. Never save your lady for the next guy!

I just hit 29k miles on my 430, which reminded me of this thread. I love driving the car so much, I just can't imagine letting it sit in the garage. I suppose if you have a fleet of exotics that's one thing, but as a mere mortal like myself, I just don't understand the fear of value loss with miles. Why buy one in the first place if you're just going to stare at it?! And it's so much better for the car to keep the life juices flowing.

My 360 is doing temporary daily driver duties while my wife’s car is in the shop. Rolled over to 27k on the way home from work yesterday.

Sometimes someone's trophy works out in your favor. When I bought my 360, it was about 10k lower than the market. Two things attributed to this--it had 22k miles and the awful color!

Drive to enjoy. As one poster hear said, I'm also not saving or building my cars for the next guy.

When I was 16 I got my first car. I bought it myself and I didn't grow up with money. My dad worked a blue collar job and while he was kind of quiet about it, he liked cars but never really had the "disposable income" to indulge. When I got my first car back from the upholsterer my parents came out to look at the new seats in white vinyl. I was ecstatic. My mom suggested that I get the new white seats some seat covers to keep them nice and looking new. I wasn't a fan of that. My Dad's only comment was "why save it for the next guy?" Never forgot that.

Funny story, I was expecting something horrible :) Are all the high mileage cars daily drivers? Do you own any other exotics? I have put about 12,000 on my car in 10 years and quite happy. I have noticed that I drive it less now then I did in the 1st 6 years.
