I am looking for lifts for the garage - probably 4 post as it is for storage. Who/what have you used? Recommendations? Advice?

Don't have to go too far...place down in Newark sells and services them. It's a solid lift and he's had it in his house for about 4 years now with no issues. I ~think~ they install too...but not certain on this. He went with the basic Atlas 8K that he and his brother assembled in a few hours and used to store two Heffner TT Viper's so plenty of room and supported decent amount of weight.

Doug, as jon mentioned, I think of my lift as one of my children!

Anyhow, if you go to the website for "backyard buddy", watch their video and that 20 minutes will show you why their lift is superior to others. I love it. Really well made and it does NOT have to be drilled into your floor. In fact, I bought the coaster kit and I actually can wheel it around with my car on it!

Talk to me about pricing offline. I will pm you with my cell number

How much height do you need in the garage to put one of these in? Will it work in a standard garage?

  7. Joe Mac

Depends on height of the two cars you're trying to stack. Add a foot or two to the height of your cars

I bought a "Pro Park 8 Plus" from Greg Smith Equipment in Newark, DE last year and am pleased with it. The cost was around $2200 without delivery but did include a caster set, trip pans, and jack bridge. I drove in from Annapolis with a car trailer and picked it up myself. The "8 Plus" is an extended height model. You don't have to scrunch up to walk underneath it at full extension. The assembly manual was a bit cryptic in places and took a little head scratching to figure out, but the job wasn't too difficult. One thing to be careful about is the weight of the pieces. I specifically asked if two guys could lift any of the parts and was told "Yes". I should have been more specific and asked if "two normal adult males" could lift the parts, because there is no way that anyone short of two Olympic weight lifters could heft the piece that had the hydraulic ram attached to it. We had to use am engine hoist and cart to move that sucker around. Three of us did manage to maneuver the piece for short distances. All in all, I'm happy with this unit, and will likely get another one.

    +1.
I just had a DirectLift Pro Park 8 installed in my garage also. I spent a LOT of time trying to decide which ones to get. The American manufacturers try to tell you that no Chinese made lift could ever be as good as an American one, but this is not true IMHO. Some of the loudest squawkers in the American market have failed to have their lifts evaluated by any third party tester to verify their weight claims and design of their lifts.

For me, Rotary and BendPak (excellent products that are certified) were too expensive. DirectLift is owned by Rotary/Dover.

What made the decision for me was that I wanted a "certified" lift. The Automotive Lift Institute evaluates/tests/certifies lifts. They have a list of verified and tested lifts on their website, and this was one of them.

I have been very happy thus far, and I spent significantly less money than some of the other lifts.

Do you have one or two of the bridge jacks? Hard to tell from the picture.
I'm thinking of the ProPark 8Plus for my garage too.

I saw Pete's lift in action when I delivered a car to him the other day, and it is indeed impressive.

Are those Pro Jacks? Did you get the 3500s or the 4500s? I have a rotary and had no idea about bridge jacks. Thought I would have to buy a separate scissor jack to do suspension work. Those are awesome!

Last december I purchased the SS8000 model 4 post lift from American Automotive Equipment - $1595 plus shipping out of Texas (another $300) including drip pans, cross member, and wheel assemblies. Straight forward assembly and it works fine. A friend with a BackYard Buddy, who helped me put it together was rather impressed with the unit.

Several other friends have 2 post or 4 post lifts. With the exception of the BackYard Buddy, they all seem about the same - probably all come from the same factory in China.

I'm a big fan of the Bend Pak in the four post and the rotary in the two post. The Bend Pak has two separate safety stops. The normal one that clicks as you raise the lift that you have to release to lower the car and another set that will lock in the event of a cable failure while lowering the car. A lot of the cheaper lifts only have one set of stops and as long as the cable doesn't break while you have them retracted to lower the car you're fine.

A similar thread is going in the Tech section http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=296270

I have the backyard buddy. It was needlessly expensive - maybe 2-3 times market. I am also not sure why I got the 8000lb model. Hindsight.
My next lift will be from gregsmith or more likely from costco.com - search for lift.

BendPak, Rotary(Revolution) or ProPark 8/8Plus, these are the third party certified/tested lifts. Don't cheap out on a lift that's not certified.

I'm on the fence with lifts myself, not sure if I will need extra width to do engine drops between the drive-on ramps.

I have been on the fence about a BB lift to the point, I started looking around...

A new company (about a year old) called Heartland Lifts has caught my attention. The owner was at an event at Autobahn Racetrack and his demo lift looked SOLID! Told me they could install for a few hundred bucks, saving me the setup on my own!

I am leery of the 4 post lifts that do not use solid 4x4 stock (vs. their folded designs w. ladders or welded tabs). They even make one for 2 cars in one lift!

Anyways, I've looked, and believe I will buy a Heartland Lift

I am about to install new garage doors and openers. Any special set up I ought to consider for the openers/rails on the doors if I intend to get lifts at some point? Thanks.

I didn't look at the link but you want a Jack Shaft door opener. Liftmaster makes a nice one.
