Hey guys, I will be in Chicago this coming weekend, and I was wondering what I could do on Friday night or Saturday that is car-oriented. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for that! I am going to visit Bentley Gold Coast while down there, I was there a couple of weeks back but didn't get a chance to spend a whole lot of time there. Hopefully we'll be able to find more to do before Sunday, and hopefully I don't get bombarded for saying this, but before I watch my cardinals play your Cubs at Wrigley. :)
(Don't worry, I've heard all the insults before)

Car-oriented? Garage your car and walk around. Unless you get up early to drive around, which can be awesome on a nice day. Just sort of cruise Lake Shore and Michigan Avenue.

That's cool you're going to the game. I live just a few blocks from Wrigley and the Cardinal series always bring the best crowds. Have you picked a bar yet?

Unfortunately no time for that, Im heading up on Friday with my dad, I think we're going to eat at that restaraunt, I always forget the name of it, but the one that was owned by the man that owned the "cursed" goat. We're pretty much leaving St. Louis around 9 am Friday, relax on Friday night, then Saturday we're checking out Bentley Gold Coast, the Science and Industry Museum, Shed Aquarium and Watertower Place, and then Sunday is consumed by the game...I've never been to Wrigley before, Ive heard it's incredibly nice for a 100 year old building.

Billy Goat's. If you go there, go to the original. It still has a little of its old low-brow charm. Burgers are decent, but it's more about the ambience. Sounds like a pretty full day on Saturday, that's good! But the ballpark is encircled by bars, so it's actually kind of fun to get up there early and, even if you don't go into the bars, at least do a lap around the outside and take it all in. Where are you sitting?

bentley gold coast has an impressive showroom and inventory for viewing. (no cameras allowed) after that head up rush street to either hugos frog bar or tavern on rush. get a table outside, tip back a few adult beverages and watch the bentleys and rolls and exotics drive by.

they don't call it the gold coast for nothing.

    regards,

    joe

lol, i bought tickets about a week after individual game tickets went on sale, and i was able to get 1 on the first base side about 20 rows up and one on the third base side in about the same area as the other one. i always thought rush street was in one of the bad parts of town-is that the best spot to see exotics on the road?

Ok Jack, I challenge you to name the Billy Goat places in town. A coworker of mine and I try to have lunch at all of them, but they spring up faster than we can arrange lunch. I think within a year, there will be more Billy Goats in Chicago than Starbucks. For a while I thought that was fun, but by now I think it is sick. My fav Billy Goat is still the one 1 block West of CBOT. My most unfav is the one in the food court at the Kennedy place. Sell out of a Chicago original. :(

hey, I went to chicago this spring to check out cars too. bentley gold coast will be fun... if you wait long enough they may rearrange the showroom like they did when I was there, then you will get some great photos when they park the cars on the street!! I have no idea how often they do that. Also there are a ton, a ton of hotels and inns downtown, they always have their nicest cars parked in front (ie a Flying Spur, Quattroporte, etc., some of the ones I saw). I also spent a few hours just standing on Michigan ave watching cars drive by, I saw a lot of 911's and Continental GTs. There was a also a public parking garage next to the Sears Tower that had an Aston Martin DB9... I could only show you how to get there not tell you though.

yeah-i am definitely looking forward to seeing some of those cars up there, living in STL we get a few but i doubt nowhere near as many as in Chicago, and definitely nowhere close to NYC or LA. can anyone think of some other good things to do on a weekend up there? or some good restaurants to eat at?

Yeah, it's pretty over-rated. And once the went franchise, well, there goes the charm. I make a better burger on my grill, too!

    Scott,
Rush street is not in a dangerous area. These days, you can just ask people "Where's the Viagra Triangle?" and they'll point you there. Or, close your eyes and listen for the sound of Harleys idling in the street and the insincere tittering of gold-digging women at the charms of fat wealthy men. If you go to Rush street, go to Cactus and get a good outdoor spot. The human drama that will unfold in front of you is priceless.

No, I bought "Ruby", from a private owner, with the assistance of her surrogate son, who owns Chesterfield Motorsports. The car belonged to her husband who had passed after a long illness. She said that Ruby was his mistress and kept him out of the bars and casino. She cried as we were getting ready to leave.

thanks guys, my dad and i wound up going to bentley gold coast, right off of rush street. it was pretty cool, i enjoyed it thoroughly. we wound up getting lunch at one of the restaraunts there, it was kind of caddy corner to the dealership, unfortunately i can't remember the name. a little overpriced, but it was still kind of cool to sit outside and watch the gold diggers in action and the rich guys pulling up in their ferraris/bentleys. while down there, i saw 4 continental gt's, a continental flying spur, an F430, a 360 spyder, a lamborghini gallardo, a rolls royce phantom and a rolls royce silver seraph, not to mention what i saw at the dealership. even though my cards lost the game on sunday, i will be back next year for an entire series. best comment of the weekend was at wrigley:
me: so what will you guys be doing in october?
cubs fan sitting behind me: rooting for the bears.
    perfect! :)
by the way, how do you guys manage all that traffic? even on a saturday afternoon there was tons of it on LSD, 55 near joliet and especially on 90 heading into the city...i don't think ill ever get mad at traffic again here in STL

i got one of the gallardo, but you can litterally only see the back left corner of it, as it was making a turn. the other exotics i saw were all on rush street, and i left my camera back in the hotel to charge up, so unfortunately not really

That's a tradition around here! By the looks of things, you'll be cozying up to the TV to watch the Rams at the same time:)

There was a lot going on this last weekend in the area. Saturday night was Venetian night, along with a few large outdoor festivals. And on top of that, I-94 is all but shut down for construction, which has put a huge strain on the other roads. That's why my original suggestion was to see the area by foot.

yeah, the main problem was that we got a hotel room in rosemont, not gonna do that again. not a bad hotel, it's just that driving into the city is a b****. next time i go, in a few weeks, im staying downtown, im lookin around for cheap places, and either take the metro/train or walk everywhere. yeah, the cards are not doing too well right now, but i would say we've still got the division wrapped up. at least you guys have a damn good basketball team. i wish we had of known about that venetian thing. im going to repost (gasp) this thread next time i go up to find out some more things to do around town.

Joe - I'm from Mpls and was in Chicago all week part biz/part fun. Funny you mention the above as we stopped into BGC, sat in a few cars, strolled down rush and sate in Hugo's Frog Bar one night and watched the cars roll by. The next day we ended up at Tarvern on Rush for lunch/drinks and did the same. And my name is Joe :)

We did see a ton of cars on the road too, no pics though. 430/360/355 spiders, few QP's (including my wifes) Gallardo Sypder, Phantom, Bentley Cgt's Arnage, couple db9's, etc.

We also did end up driving out to Lake Forest as well on Saturday. They had an enzo sitting on the floor there as well.
