I had a gentleman at the Festa Italiana last year thank me for placing an
8 X 11 card on the back of the 308 explaining what the car was, how old, how fast (or slow), what it cost new etc. He said that most people don't know what they are looking at and if there was some information with the car they would enjoy and appreciate it that much more.

    The sign is made of white PVC, brass hinges and chain. The back ground and lettering are done in colored vinyl. Scientifically sized to fit in the rear trunk area of the 308 complete with color coordinated storage bag. (dark blue pillow case). Hence;

I have been thinking of doing making a sign also. Your idea of a sign that can be mounted on the trunk area is good. How did you do the lettering? I had planned on haveing a sign company make mine but may consider your method.

I sort of understand why you did not list specific horsepower at the bottom. Last night I saw a commercial for a mini van that had 240 hp. But we can still beat the van on cornering, top end, and weight/hp ratio.

Oh, by the way, how many louvers on that thing? I think you will be surprised how many there are. You will probably be able to beat the Merc'.

    Cocoa puffs!!!

13" wide X 22" high. It is designed to lay flat in the trunk and when unfolded placed at the front or rear on the ground. I also had 8 X 11 laminates made to place on the dash and rear tonneu when not using the sign.

I had this one made at a sign shop in town. They do the lay up on the computer and then download to a plotter that runs the vinyl. They then stick the sheet and pull it back off leaving the letters. Then they have to weed out the centers of the letters requiring it.

    Pretty labor intensive.

What did it cost you? I'm reasearching some sources and I think I can make them for around $60 a piece. I assume this is less than you paid.

That looks fantastic DJ! So the sign shop had on their computers the Ferrari font to write up the titles like that?

Peter do a quick google search for Ferrari font and you should find it in 30 seconds or so.

Here's the link where I got it http://www.smackbomb.com/famousfonts/fonts/ferrari.html

Yes, 60.00 is less than what I paid. 97.00, tax included, for the custom cut, 1/2" PVC sheet and lay-up plus the two 8 X 11 laminated placards on heavy paper. I bought the hinges and chain and assembled the sign myself.

My time saved was worth more than the cost saved if I had done the work myself. There is a lot of time spent weeding out the 'holes' of the letters among other things.

If one were to start a production line I think it would be quite cost effective otherwise.

    Peter,
I told the sign shop the name of the Ferrari font, 'Ferro Rosso' and they downloaded it from the web.

Robert! I'm all set for the show on the 31st! Now, if the weather will cooperate!

Louvers? Hundreds and hundreds of course.

For those that don't understand; I won an award for the most louvers at the company car show a few weeks ago. Go figure!

I was told also that there is a font named "Maranello" that is either correct or a very close match.

I'll have to take a look at that one too. I imagine there may be different names for similar styles depending on who picks it up for their database.

After the Cannon Beach run and seeing what the guys had I mocked up the attached. I was planning on taking it to kinkos for laminating. I really like what you have done.

Very good. My initial draft had more information but in the interest of maximizing the size of the lettering I reduced the number of items. I also started out with a simple black and white placard and the sign shop suggested the color and revised layout.

I suppose I could type up a more detailed draft and print them up as hand outs.

Is your MSRP from a window sticker?

I found a wide range of prices for these cars from '77 through '79 as a result of some inquiries made on this site and others. I found that the prices of the 308 jumped almost 10k a year for 3 years. I used an inflation calculator to determine the dollar value of mine in today's dollars based on the price of a 308 delivered in early '79. (Mine was built in November '78) The calculator only went to 2002 so it isn't totally accurate.

I downloaded the TT Font and installed, kinda cool!

I got the MSRP from a 1978 C/D article comparing the 78 GTS, L82, Esprit and 911 Turbo. It stated the base on test car as 36,411 with Blaupunkt $800, metallic paint, $436. Price as tested $37,649. I rounded and used Economic History Services on the net to do the inflation calculation to 2003 and then fudged a little.

    I also found: http://www.ferrariclub.com/msrp/

Which shows from 41 to 45k for a 79 GTS, Maybe I should up the antie!
