I have a dream of creating a concours car show here in the Washington DC metro area. I work at Discovery Communications and we have a lovely spot for a show, combined with an area across the street. I am running into insurance questions with our building folks thinking an event of this nature would be rather expensive to hold.

Does anybody out there have experience with running a car show? I would love to get some feedback on logistics. For instance, my impression is that an owner by participating in the show is signing off on liabilty concerns. For a day long event, is that a true statement?

I envision a concours type event with Ferraris being heavily represented. There are many beautiful cars in this area. I have had the priveledge to photograph Duesenburgs, Bugattis, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and a number of other high end cars. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I want to get my facts correct prior to approaching the local government and my own company. I might even be able to get one of our Discovery shows to help sponsor and potentially film the event. Rides is the show I have in mind.

If there is anyone from the dc metro area, Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 11 or so, a bunch of car enthusiasts meet at MD 198 and route 29 at the dunken donuts. Its a good excuse to take the car out for a ride. Come join us and share your car with the community.

    thanks

Sounds like this has a lot of potential if you could get organized and pull it off, good ideas, and if you could get Discovery involved...that would make the show more proffesional. I know some members on the board have had some experience in organizing shows, Ill see if they speak up. Sounds like a good idea, I would be interested.

Are european sporty-cars welcome or is it American Muscle? I'll bring the Countach out when the roads clear up a bit (still a lot of salty runoff)...

The car show idea is great - I hope you push forward.

David - Sounds like a nice event in May. Will that be a gotta-register thing or a just-show-up thing? I'm planning on moving my car from my place in FL to my place in Rosslyn for the month of May, so the timing is pretty good. Would love to participate!

Back on the main topic, why does DC seem to have a lack of 'car stuff' going on? As one of the most affluent areas in the country, you'd think there would be plenty of car guys, concours, etc... I think setting one up might be a good thing.

    Hello Robin

We're working on the logistics now and will have more info to come in a few weeks once flyers are complete. As for the lack of Ferrari's in the area you may want to get in touch with me and you'll e surprised. The mid atlantic FCA is very active. I'll introduce you to people when you are here.

Robin, quite the contrary...the DC area has exotic car related events nearly every weekend from March-October. There is simply too much to do and not enough time...let me know when you and your car are in town so we can keep you in the loop.

The DC car scene, though not nearly as developed as SoCal, is amongst the most rabid I've ever witnessed and is still very unrealized. There are soooo many cars in the DC-Balto area, yet even with the abundance of informal events that I alluded to above, there's still room for organized scheduled events.

I'd love to organize a Crystal Cove (SoCal) type event here in the DC area. A public show that is free for everyone to gather exotics and interesting cars every weekend morning.

    Hmm...a project for spring?

Wow... I lived here for 23 years and had no clue! I'm only here M-F now and basically stuck at work all day, but I'm dying to bring the 355 up and go storming through the tunnels here :) Florida doesn't have a whole lot of those.....

I figured there were a lot of nice cars around, I just never saw them or heard about any events. The DC auto show is pretty much a joke, the DCGP barely made it through its inaugural event, and I don't ever remember seeing any large shows (ok aside from all the hot rods that show up at Burger King in Manassas every Saturday.......)

Anyway, thanks for the invites guys. I might try to hit this Fat Tuesday thing tomorrow.. might bump into some of you.

Robin, if you're not a Mid Atl FCA member and you weren't on ferrarilist.com, then I'm not sure if there was really anyway to know about local events. From what I have noticed over the past 18 months, only highrollersrun.com organizes events locally using FChat as a forum.

When I joined FList in 1997, there were quite a few local exotic car owners. The number has grown and now FChat has become another outlet to meet other owners.

These two online resources and FCA are it for *exotic car* events...And I mean real car events like tech sessions, rallies, track days, etc... I'm not counting the social outings on Saturday night (which are amazing thanks to highrollersrun.com and other organizations).

We had a pretty busy year last season from March-December. Just a few more weeks until we get back into full swing.

BTW-I'm organizing a rally/karting day next month. Check out the other post for details. Before that should be FMoW's annual Australian GP kickoff party. We've got two events within the next month and it's still winter!

I just sent in my RSVP for the FMoW Australian GP party on March 5. If you're not on the mailing list, call the dealership and ask to be put on it for the party.

I know you guys have been asking for weeks about our first event. This is it!

Being an uneducated newbie, here's the rookie question. FMoW (Ferrari Maserati of Washington?) or Friendly Men on Women or French Maggots on Wimbeldon? Just a few stabs at it.

I'm signed up for the newsletter, I'll need to read it more carefully
    thanks

Seeing that the extent of my knowledge of sport bikes is based on Bruce Wayne's garage in the original Batman, I not very well versed in the genre.

However, bikes certainly don't take up as much space but I would have to be educated on the subject. My primary approach at this point is the marketing to potential sponsors of high end automobiles. I will definely consider your request.

In reality, I am shooting for Spring 2006. In order to do this properly and get it on the correct people's calendars, I need time to get organized. I will continue to keep the group posted at this forum. I will say that I have made some great contacts (thanks to everyone who has contacted me and offered help and advice!) and now have a road map to make this concours event a reality.

    Ken,

Now that your talking 06 I'd be willing to help you out with this project. I was the concours chairman for the local BMW club chapter from 91 thru 03, entered as a particpant from its inception, done Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls, multimake and custom shows with both cars and bikes. Was also a board member for the Baltimore Concours D'Elegance if anyone remembers that one...if you were in the area and into exotics you would be sure to remember this show..it died because of lack of financing after the city cut funding and a major sponsor went belly-up! Then of course there was the National Capital Concours...ahh, bet many many of you don't remember that! Hmm, Sam Smith (now if you don't know him..then you are new to Ferrari in this area) and the Collector Car Society used to put on a really nice multi-make event at Blobs Park...many moons ago! Luckily I do have pics and videos (1) of these events...didn't have DVD then. All that to say, this area has had some very good shows in the past.

Anyway, there are a lot of different routes to go with putting a show together although its best to keep it simple...believe me! Low key fun event with public access etc...non-competitive keeps the egos in check!

On another note, the Washington area has been home to a huge number of exotic vehicles long before Ferrari Chat was born, and even before the internet was in use. Lashss is right, the car scene here is nothing compared to SoCal..one of the big differences being attitude...SoCal has real car guys that mix-it-up, meaning you may hang out at a car gathering and see everthing from a 41 Willys to an Enzo, a Cord and several Harley's. Here you tend to see either all street rods here, exotics and or Porsches there, bikes meet somewhere else...for some reason they just don't mix it up! Well, there is the annual Rockville car show in October..that draws quite a mix from the parking lot to the show field.

Anyway, I'm in.. PM me when you have a chance and we'll try to hook up for lunch or something as I live not far from Silver Spring.. or I guess maybe I'll see you and some of the other "chatters" at FOW for the F1.

Until then..keep the shiny side up!!

i appreciate any performance/exotic/crafted car, i think there should be a show called "envycars" -any car that the general public would enjoy looking at ... not just a honda with a pipe on it, but maybe a honda with a supercharger on it .... and of course any rare cars , bikes etc.. (basically , anything that the owner has spent excessive amounts of money on! )its nteresting to see what people do with their play money....:)
