With trade in values being so low, dealers still asking for quite a bit of profit, buyers making stupid offers and at the end not coming thru,(changed my mind, can't get financed, wife said no, blah blah.......) maybe swaping cars would not be a bad idea.
With the power of the internet and forums like this one it should be easy...not to mention that you would really know where the car came from.
Between all of us we must own all the model and makes of cars out there making it the best selection out there.
So, I'll start...will swap 1999 456gt black on tan, 6 speed,30.000 miles ,30k service performed, located around DC, for 2000 to 2003 Bentley Arnage, similar miles, white or blue.
I figured trade in and retail on both cars should be about the same , but if I trade mine or sell it I would be lucky yo get 55k to 60k or so, and then have to pay 65k to 75k for the Bentley. the Bentley guy should be on the same boat...so why not swap.
Hey just an idea...Do not try to swap anything else as the Bentley is the only car I'm interested in.

This idea would only work between close friends unless you're talking about signing the cars over.

    Interesting thread idea.
I've had this in the back of my mind so here goes:
2000 360, red/tan, loaded with factory options (grills, sheilds, daytonas, etc etc etc)... except for the silly flappy paddles (a true driver's car since it's a manual :p)... all services up to date and 100 miles on a new clutch. Needs nothing and a real stunner. 28k miles. Incredible stereo installed but still have factory stuff too. Tubi installed and still have EOM exhaust. All keys, records, tools, blah blah blah. Extremely well cared for and still very loved....

    -but-

.... I'd be curious if anybody wants to trade for some property in central Oregon (Bend/Redmond area).

Plus cash either way is an option too.

    Just tossing it out there.

Buddy, you need not wait long. I have never seen a car in such free fall as the Exige S. I have seen 2007 cars that stickered for 68k sell for around 40k.

Great car though, probably the best sports car I have ever owned.

Ironically, I traded mine +cash on my current 355. It worked great for both of us.

Haha well if an Elise is something you'd be interested in, we could talk ;-) I've always found the 308's to be dead sexy, but I still have not had a chance to drive one.

I've also been thinking about trading cars and was wondering about the tax implication. Would one have to still pay sales tax on the full value of the vehicle? I'm in California.

2005 Porsche 997 Carrera with lots of Techart upgrades. It has 9053 miles and has been well maintained. The car is at a dealer on consignment at the moment, but let me know what you are offering and it might be yours.

Nice! My first was a '76 280Z - great car. That's what prompted me to acquire the '72...tons of fun, only an F-Car will get me to part with it.

Its gorgeous out here (but you probably already knew that). I can get you in touch with my real estate agent if interested.

I do suggest you read this, however, which was published just a few days ago: http://www.centraloregonrealtors.com/stats.pdf

We use bill of sale here, unless it is just way off. If you have a Bill of Sale and the person at DMV accepts the price, you are fine. Since I didn't buy the car from a dealer, and didn't actually pay a set price for it (we negotiated the difference in the trade) I had a lot of wiggle room. So I had a bill of sale signed that was what I figured a "reasonable" cost (that is to say as low as I thought I could go). At the time, it was a pretty significant savings. Looking at the current market, it was probably a pretty fair estimate. It has rolled over to my personal property tax, which is about half what it was on my 512TR that I bought from a dealer and had to use an actual sale price.

I've only ever paid the sales tax on the difference between the two cars. If there is an even trade, there is no difference, thus no sales tax.

Jim- That is the way it is in New Mexico. Plus there is no sales tax, only a 3% excise tax on the difference, which is tax deductible.

In December 2001 I traded by 1993 348 Spider even for the 1982 BB512i I currently own. I drove the 348 to Springfield, Ohio, traded cars and titles and I drove the BB512i back home to Georgia...
