Anyone else see the article on car theft in Oregon, that ran in Willamette Week this week? Basically, if you are caught in a stolen car and tell the officer that you didn't know it was stolen (you bought it from your friend for cash, or your friend lent it to you), you can't be convicted. So the cops and prosecutors don't even bother to arrest you!

So guess what, car theft in Portland is up over 50% this year!

    Amazing...

I'm baffled by the fact that law enforcement in Portland can find any way to not do there job.

I saw that and was going to post in P&R.
The cop has to ask “Did you know this car is stolen ?”
Perp is sitting behind the wheel of the stolen car, smiling he says “Nope”
....have to let them go, what is wrong with this picture ..... lol.
Guess you still have to follow the law and report the crime so insurance will pay you when your car is stolen.
    Portland is a ****ing joke.

To be fair, it isn't just Portland. It's the entire state. There just happen to be more thefts in Portland than in other places, but the ruling applies statewide.

The pathetic thing is that, not once, but twice, our legislators have considered fixing this and have instead let it die in committee.

My car was broken into in a parking garage downtown. The police don't even bother to take a report-- you just fill out a form on their website, so that you can give the report to your insurance.

However, about 6 months ago, the state treasurer's car was broken into while parked downtown. The thieves were in jail in 2 hours!

Being Oregon I guess the perp would also know nothing about the stolen firearm in said stolen vehicle ?
    “Nope”
How about all this meth/heroin/cocaine packaged to sell in some bags ?
    “Nope”
    And these burglary tools ?
    “Nope”
Ok so you can go, but we are going to tow the car.
“I know see you later, I can get another one around the corner”

It's not her problem, unfortunately. They need to change the law-- until then, there is nothing she can do.

If the authorities do NOT protect my property from low life's & scumbags. I will, & a dead car thief cannot steal any more vehicles. Problem solved and we can cull the population of uneeded miscreants which definitely needs to happen!

Being in Oregon you better not shoot anybody outside your house ;)
Even if they kick in the front door you can only shoot them if they are facing you and advancing.
There are rare exceptions, you won’t be one of them.

    Don't even get me started...

My wife is the Ex. Dir. of a non-profit in old town. She has had employees (female) assaulted by known individuals (she didn't have a cigarette for him, so he punched her in the stomach). Because they have been identified as having mental issues, the police do not even bother talking to them. They know exactly who it is and he is still walking the streets downtown. I can't believe tourists still visit Portland.
