COVID permitting I am going to be visiting LA in December. I will be there twice once at the start of December and again at the end.

Is there anything good to see / do thats car related? Even better if its Ferrari related.

I appreciate its probably the wrong time of year!!

Petersen museum, Nethercutt collection and the Ferrari store. All worth doing while you’re in LA.

Visit FastCars in Redondo Beach and ask Craig (owner) for a tour. From very early Ferraris, Alfas, and other Europeans, super cars, and modern exotics to rare race cars, FastCars has it all. They do service, engine builds, complete nut and bolt or specific restorations, fabrication, and even offer vintage rally experiences through their subsidiary Retro Rally Group. Everyone there is super accommodating and friendly. There are plenty of threads with pictures of Fchatter visits to FastCars, so definitely do a search and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

The Peterson Museum is another must see. Significant Ferraris are well represented, along with just about every other manufacturer. Their exhibits frequently change. I went yesterday and saw an incredible Formula One display, a RUF exhibit, a special Pininfarina display, famous movie cars, and of course, the Vault tour, which includes the very first Ferrari made, a 1947 125s, and a screen used Magnum p.i 308 GTS. Over 250 significant cars are stored in the Vault and its a separate premium tour from general admission. Well worth the extra $.

Folks were driving up to Malibu for a large impromptu show on Sundays at the market which was cool. Lots of great metal but I am uncertain if that is still ongoing as I have not been in weeks.

Peterson is great too. We live around the block and recommend that too.

These are great car things to do in the state that’s killing the car. After you do these things flee L. A. as quickly as possible. LOL. On a very serious note do NOT go to Venice beach.

Thank you all. I was not expecting such a response!

I have never been to LA before, is it worth hiring a car at the airport or best to get a taxi to the city then hire a car inside the city for better prices?

We need to drive over to Reno and Flagstaff during the time we are there.

I’ve heard that the price of rental cars is ridiculous now, apparently because of Covid???? Reno and Flagstaff are far from LA. How long will you be visiting LA?

There are some big car shows nearly every weekend… bump this thread a couple weeks before tour date of arrival and I’ll post the ones coming up.
Today there was a very nice Cars and Castles event in San Clemente.
I’m fact, Sam Clemente throws a huge cars and coffee on Saturday mornings.

I’d skip the Ferrari Store unless you were already planning to shop at the Beverly center.

Around 1 month. LA is our entry / exit point and we have yet to decide how long to stay near the city but probably 3-4 days at each end of the trip.

Thanks I will do, just waiting on POTUS to let us in! :D

A month will give you plenty of time to see everything. The Grand Canyon is spectacular if you haven’t seen it in person.

If you're looking for something more interactive, take a drive up Angeles Crest and stop in Newcombs Ranch on a Sunday morning. You'll see many interesting cars and car enthusiasts and have a great drive in the process.

Thanks that sounds great. We are planning to book a hotel for our arrival but then when we come back for new year I think we will go with an airbnb a bit further north. I now have a great list of things to do thanks guys and I will post up a bit nearer the time once things are confirmed travel wise regarding any sunday c&c type events thanks!!

Trip to Santa Barbara (about 2 hours) and Sante Inez Valley wine country ( 1 more hour) and up to Hwy 1 is a good road trip. Then there is always Carmel/ Monterey and Big Sur is also good if you have the time and want to go that far, multiple day trip.

Echoing the sentiments of others -

Petersen is great. Craig and his shop Fast Cars is great...very friendly and always wonderful cars to see.

There are a number of car shows in LA....

There is Malibu Country Kitchen which is unofficial and unsanctioned (kind of a running joke among regulars) that happens every Sunday around 10am. That's the one the car TV/Social media personality guys show up at...Spike Feresten, Matt Farah, Jay Leno, Seinfeld when he's in town, etc etc. Usually several Ferrari's at this one. Sometimes amazing old cars, sometimes flashy new stuff.

Cars and Coffee LA happens the last Sunday of every month in the Griffith Park Merry Go-round parking lot. Less Ferrari centric - a bunch of Porsche stuff and random stuff as well.

Then there are some less publicized others that pop up. Pretty cool to live in a place where one guy daily drives a 250 SWB and another is a member of a family that collects vintage Ferrari's, and they both show up at the same low key C&C to hang out on a Sunday morning.

The only thing Covid has really hurt in terms of car culture here is browsing through dealerships. Heritage Classics shut down and was purchased by Hauser & Wirth to be another gallery location. I think all the remaining dealerships are appt only right now. I walked into Marshall Goldman one morning without an appt and they all acted like I'd just publicly defiled their daughter in the town square!
