Anyone shipped a car recently? Just want to get a feel for prices. I've done some online quotes, but it is the weekend so no responses. Looking for enclosed transport, small car from Chicago to Boston. Transported recently similar distance? please let me know. thanks
It depends what you are shipping... Small car meaning small exotic, or a Hyundai Excel? My friend recently shipped his Jag from NY to Las Vegas on an open trailer (though it was extra to be on the top) for about $1200. My fiance recently shipped her car when we moved and paid about $900. So I'd imagine your probably going to pay around $2K for a nice enclosed trailer and depending on if they pick it up at your house, etc.
Recently shipped my TR from Naples Florida to Dallas Texas enclosed trailer three day turnaround $1500 I moved my 355 from NC where I bought it to Dallas and that was enclosed one week turnaround $1100
Call Passport Transport. They are actually called Fed Ex custom critical. There prices are very good and normally have a good turnaround. We ship alot of our vehicles with them. You should be able to get the car moved for less then $1500 unless they have to go into the City of Boston. Not sure exactly where you are. They will charge more to go into the city. There big trucks don't like city steets.
Passport they are very good I used Exotic Car Transportation once and had some delivery timing issues. Martin
Exotic Car Transport from Orlando, transported my 512BBi this past June from Costa Mesa to Boca Raton for under $1400 in an enclosed truck. Myabe the rate was good because they are from Orlando, but I highly recommend trying them.
Passport was founded by my uncle... http://passport.fedex.com/us/about/history.shtml He and my father are twins. Can't hardly tell them apart.
Avoid Dependable Auto Shippers at all costs! My father transferred a Porsche 911 from Dallas to L.A. & it took them 10 days when we were quoted 3 days. Apparently, they wanted to make a stop in Denver & Lake Tahoe before going to Los Angeles. I hear good things about Passport quite often.
Call Specialty Mobile System. I used them to transport my 328 on a enclosed truck from Rhode Island to New Mexico. Excellente service. Cost = $1800.00 http://www.autotransportspecialty.com/ If like to read some reviews about their service, go to: http://www.auto-transport-reviews.com/review/Specialty-Mobile-Systems.asp If you need more information, I will be glad to answer any question you may have. While I would have preferred to use Gary Almond (and did speak with him) he was heading off for vacation and I ended up using Passport (which is now owned by Fed-Ex) to ship my 355 from Houston to Arizona. The service was very good, car arrived in excellent condition and driver was very accommodating. The only down side was that they could not get a truck to Houston for about 2-3 weeks which means I had to wait about a month for the car to arrive.
Had a bad experience with Passport. After 4 weeks I called & cancelled. Their customer service was horrible on top of the wait. I was put on hold for so long I would have to hang up & call again. I think they have three people working in their whole office. Passport had the best price & since they are affiliated with FedEx and they are located in my home town of St.Louis I thought it was a sure thing. Maybe I just called them while they were having a bad month or something.
Anyone heard of Autobahn Transport out of Lemont IL (Chicago 'burb)? They quoted me $990. Others are $1500 (for enclosed).
Talked to Gary today... very nice guy. Problem is, he does not provide insurance. He recommends checking with my insurance, says it ususally covers transport. Which then begs the next question: If your car was damaged in transport, would you expect your insurance to cover it? I'll post that in another thread....
If he doesn't have insurance to cover damage during transport his rates should be much lower. I would not want the claim going against my insurance if they were responsible.
These guys seem to be the ones to go with. I asked them about insurance.... 100K, no questions asked. They damage the car, they pay for it (up to 100K). Period. (they say) I'd rather use a company thats gonna make it right than have to rely on my insurance company (unfortunatly, Gary Almond can not provide that).
Don't get too caught up in the insurance issue - I've very VERY rarely seen "no questions asked" reimbursement on claims, regardless of how obvious it was that it was the drivers' fault. If you don't get the estimated damage (if it's small) knocked off the cost of shipping when you hand them a check, be aware that it's most likely going to take scads of phone calls to the truckers' insurance co (they won't talk to you themselves in most cases) to get settlement, IF the insurance co doesn't find some reason to bone you. I've even seen some truckers (large and small outfits though I won't name names) who have a few shell companies set up, so they present you with one insurance company for one trucking company name when you order service, then have the paperwork at pickup/dropoff done in another company name, then insurance co systematically denies all claims because there is no direct relationship. I recall one incident that I was thankfully only an ancillary party to, where a customer shipped a car via a carrier, car was tied down improperly and caused battery ground cable to rub on a suspension component as the truck went over bumps - took about 3/4 of the way across the country, but eventually shorted completely and burned much of the truck, the entire car, and a few others in the truck as well. Last I heard the trucking co. was still not covering the costs and blaming the customer for having faulty wiring. I think someone here on F-chat posted this in the past, but just as a good reference - http://www.safersys.org/ HTH
