I read the previous thread on this and thought I could shed some industry knowledge on prevention since I work in the trucking insurance industry.

-As previously mentioned, it's much safer to use a known trucking carrier directly. But when I did, I requested a certificate of insurance to make sure they had a large enough cargo limit to cover the contents of ALL cars transported. In this case, they had a $2,000,000 limit.

-If you're dealing with a freight broker, it's their duty to make sure that whoever they sub the job to is legit and adequately covered. However, it's often a young freight broker focused on volume and perhaps not vetting the carrier like they should.*

*In this instance, I would recommend asking the broker for the following info:
-MC # of the trucking company. On www.safersys.org you can view how long their authority has been active, their public insurance filings and even some safety info/violations... etc...
-I would also ask the broker to provide the certificate of insurance and the truck VIN # of the truck that will move your vehicle. Then I'd call the insurance agency and verify coverage and the VIN of their truck.
(I'd confirm that this truck is in-fact the trucking picking up your vehicle)

Cargo theft has been trending up.
Fraudsters often identify expensive freight on a load boards, provide a fake certificate of insurance just hoping they can show up and drive off with the freight. We've dodged a few bullets when we've had freight brokers call us or call the "real" trucking company to verify a pick up.

PM me if you'd like any help

I have never really been happy with a broker for transporting my cars, I have had very good luck with Plycon not the cheapest but they are transported in large enclosed trucks also have had reasonable luck with reliable although they may be slower… my dealer uses an independent same driver …which i like and he has been picking my cars up for 15 years when i send them for service again not the cheapest but i trust him…
As far as brokered deals i have sold cars and the buyer arranged transportation and while i am sure they arrived fine.I have had non english speaking drivers show up amd one guy did not know how to drive a manual and wanted me to drive the car on the trailer. In that case i called the buyer and asked him if he wanted to go with this guy and I did what he said…
