Hey everyone, I'm planning on attending car week this year for the first time, and I managed to book a hotel near Ocean Ave, but at a steep price.

The Inn I'm staying at Carmel is about $2000 for four nights, I can get an apartment, or hotel in Monterey for about $1000, even less if I stay at an apartment.

How is traffic and surge pricing with Uber during this week? Would it be more cost-beneficial to stay in Monterey and commute, and essentially just stay in Carmel all day? It's me and my girlfriend and we're both students, so we would prefer not to spend about $3k for the week.

I've also found places on the other side of the one in Carmel, would those be good to consider as well? If we're going to be walking around all day I don't think we'll be using the hotel much besides sleeping and showering. So it makes more sense to lower it's expense.

    Thanks.

I just found a place in Carmel for $182 a night off the 1, a little south of Ocean Ave. It's still a less than a mile walk from downtown, so I decided to book it.

My main concern was traffic and transportation costs being ridiculous.

Traffic is terrible but the events are scattered around so there is no escaping getting stuck in it.

Assuming this place in Carmel falls through (still awaiting confirmation), would it make sense to book a place in Monterey for half the price of Carmel? It's my understanding that there are shuttles everywhere.
If so, where in Monterey should I stay. It seems more scattered than Carmel.

I've been told there are shuttles all over the city to transport people around.

Yes haha, it was a guest house. It fell through, he wants about $100 more a day, but if I can get it for around $250, I would still consider it a deal. Currently pending another room around $180 a night. So let's home it goes through.

I have been going for many years and this is the closest that I have come to a "Shuttle System". However, the shuttles are busses and they get caught in the same heavy traffic as everyone. The problem is that the Monterey Carmel roads are simply not designed for the volume of traffic that descends every year.

Shuttles do not cover the territory for all the major events (eg, are there shuttles that go out to Laguna Seca for the historic racing?).

No matter where you decide to stay, driving in traffic will be required...it's unavoidable. If you don't want to worry about driving after tipping back a few (too many), then get lodging closest to where the tipping will occur (eg, downtown Carmel or downtown Monterey). I don't often see taxis around, so I can't speak to how available they are normally let alone when a billion people are in town for car week.

And technically, it's illegal for private property owners in Carmel to rent out space on a short-term basis (anything less than 30 days). The restriction varies by town.

I ended up getting a place at a really good rate from AirBNB and I'm about a 3/4 quarters of a mile from Junipero and Ocean.

I'm a little confused on the shuttle system. Whenever I've called an Inn, or the info center they told me during car week they have shuttles that take people to and from the major events. I was told a shuttle pass will run about $20/day and I can hop on/off without a problem.

Is this not a thing? Walking isn't a problem, if anything I'm happy how close of a place I got.

Also thanks for everyone's input, you all reassured I shouldn't stay in Monterey.

I have a place on Junipero that's 2 1/2 blocks from Ocean (but I have tenants). From your lodging location, the walkable events are Carmel Concours on Ave (free!! on that Tues), Pebble Beach Tour lunch break (free! on that Thurs). Both are very worthwhile events and the only downside is parking for those who are driving to them.

All other car activities are outside of downtown Carmel and require transportation to get to them.

If this is the shuttle you are talking about, it is VERY limited in where it goes. Just a small part of Monterey itself. It would be of limited use for the widespread car week.

You won't be able to avoid traffic during car week. I'm a local and plan my events carefully with a traffic variable. For example pebble on Sunday , quail on Friday , Carmel concours Tuesday, are all laden with traffic. Just factor extra commute time and you should be fine. I would recommend that you not try to do too many events your first time out here, or you will be very exhausted and it will seem like a blur and less enjoyable.

Stay in Pacific Grove . Back roads to Carmel. Easy access to Monterey. Plan your trips well and leave early. Lots of free events. Don't worry about the high profile events that cost the earth. Jon in Delaware
