What has been the symptoms of a stock fuel pump failing? I noticed an odd sound, and it wouldn't start. Then I reached way down in there and banged on it while it was on, and the sound changed to the familiar note, I heard the float bowls fill, and it ran fine. Then I drove her, the sound went funny again and she started starving out, I switched it off, and back on, the sound changed back to normal, and it ran fine. The stock pumps look correct, but I gather they are major $$$. Many replacements range from 35 - 80$. Appreciate input.
Check the connector first and if same results it looks like the pump is failing. As to a replacement I have heard that "Carter" make a suitable replacement which is quieter than the OEM. Also not to expensive. Look it up in JEG's or some other speed shops.
"Pierburg" is another good (and unique ) manufacturer's name to search with for prior carb fuel pump threads discussing alternatives.
Thank you again F-chatters. I've got the FACET in the Dino, and it looks perfect there. In the 308, that little corner with the pump filter has a bit of a fit issue. Anybody ever hear of rebuilding the orig? BTW, anybody notice the AEG stamp on top of the orig motor housing. Is that Alghemeny Electrische Gezellschaft (sp?) ??
What you think is a failing fuel pump can really be a failing voltage to the fuel pump. Commonly caused by the ailing fuse panel and cured by the Birdman's replacement. Before condemning the FP check the FP Fuel Pump or Fuse Panel? that is the question
Fuse blocks are a common gremlin in the pretty little cars. I've done the fuse block exercise back in 1988 when all sorts of electrical things wouldn't work. What I've got going on now is the pump sounds odd, and if I reach way down in the engine compartment and smack the think while it's turning, the sound changes. Also, when it's humming along, the sound will change, and it starves. Inside the pump is amagnetic coupling. If the pump sticks, the coupling will not hang on (like a slipping clutch). I will check the voltage going to it if it tries it again. Thae battery is fresh, and the charging circuit is solid.
Friends, My dream of having two Ferraris was when I was working on one I could drive the other one. Today was a beautiful day so I pulled out the 74 Euro GT4 and when I engage the key the fuel pump started making a crazy sound I've never heard before. I drove this car yesterday had it up to speed on the freeway and the car screamed. I drove it around a little bit today thinking it would sort itself out, but it started scaring me when it was louder than the engine at idle, and my engine pretty loud! When Al restored this car im sure he put in the correct original pump. Can anyone identify it? I have a Facet in my US GT4 and the clicking sound it makes is reassuring. This original spec one always made a funny noise like it was choking. I loathe to switch it out because this car is so original, but wanted to ask all your opinion for what would be the most reliable upgrade. Is this pump even this available? Here is a video if it will upload and a picture of the current pump making the noise. Thanks for any input and suggestions. If I went with a Facet, it looks like a pretty straight swap out except for the hose locations. Rob BTW That video is with the engine off!!!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Rob I think most are using the facet. I’ve read somewhere there maybe rebuild parts for the corona style pump.
Interesting the new pump failed while your old on rattles on. Facet on mine I believe, and there's two PSI ratings I think. Chose the lower one 3 to 5PSI, in my experience..
Sorry for the double post I moved my questions and comments to this thread which has more info for everyone! Thanks for all the replies!!! https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/which-facet-pump-for-a-308.221767/page-3
