    Does your car have a dashpot? If so, its sole purpose is to bring down the revs slowly when the throttle is lifted. When I did my carbs, I left it off. Image Unavailable, Please Login

    Hoop-la!

    I screwed all 8 idle mixture screws out 5 turns.
    I screwed out the idle speed screws, so the butterflies were completely closed.
    To keep the car running I had to then turn the idle speed screws in 1/2 a turn or so.

    Boom! The car fired up enthusiastically and returned immediately to idle after blipping the throttle.
    This was the first thing I did when I got home tonight. I am absolutely delighted, if a little irritated that I tried to stick so rigidly to the instruction book...

    Now the trick is to see how much I can lean the mixture off without having to turn the idle screws in too much (exposing the progression holes).
    Such a relief :D

    In fairness to the various guides they did say don't turn the idle speed screw in more than 1 1/2 turns. I'm guessing I must have used more turns than that to keep the car idling with the lean mixture.

    So just to be sure if I haven't already stated this, Webers are adjusted to best lean idle. this is done by getting it to idle, turning out mixture screw until idle goes up, then baking off idle speed screw to get it back down to base revs, then repeating process over and over until you reach the point that any adjustment in the idle mixture screw causes the idle to slow. Each barrel separately.

    And most carb problems are ignition problems.

    For anyone finding this thread, the EBay A/F gauges finally arrived and they are not wide band sensors, just high/low switches (rich/lean) so I will send them back unless they can provide wide band sensors (perhaps at an additional cost.)
