    be transmission-wary on the fords.

for plowing I'd honestly look for a chevy/GMC. MUCH better transmissions.

unless you were looking at a 3/4 or 1-ton diesel, in which case the Dodge motors/transmissions are generally the top of the heap... otherwise, I can't recommend a ford truck to much of anyone.

While those opinions may or may not be warranted, and I know everyone has their own opinions in the Ford/Chevy/Dodge wars...

When looking at 5 to 10 year old trucks like Steve is, the REAL key to getting a reliable truck is finding one that was impeccably maintained. Give me a 10 year old pickup of any make/model/drivetrain that has been regularly serviced, over a 5 year old truck with NO service records of any make/model/drivetrain.

Thanks guys and esp. Chris for the CarFax :)

Is a Ford really THAT bad? This is a F350 and am basically needing it to haul junk to the garbage and also plow my nearly 1/2-mile long up/down hill driveway over the five month long winter season. The F350 is a BIG truck and probably more than i need (??????????) but overkill is a good thing.

Advice? Questions for me? Anyone got a good lead to good vehicles under $10k?

Basically the truck will be BARELY USED in the summer (Fcar is my daily) and as basic transportation and plow in the winter.

I developed those opinions while working at a ford dealership and by living in a world where trucks are more common than cars, without knowing what exactly you were looking at I was trying to just make some general statements, but it is my complete opinion that no half-ton ford or DCX 4-spd OD Auto trans is worth CRAP. they both made excellent old 3-speeds, but their newer OD units were aweful.

my dad owned a 98 Dodge for about 105K and was religiously anal about the upkeep and the trans was about shot when he sold it in late 04. IMO, heavy use, be it hauling, towing, plowing, whatever, will kill those transmissions.

I really don't have an axe to grind here, but that was my experience and I have a lot of people who tend to agree with me.

manual-trans is a totally different issue, and the HD units in the 3/4-ton and up trucks tend to be less flimsy, but my statements were made in reference to the lighter-duty units as I don't know how to decode the VINs anymore.

All opinions are desired from those with experience. FYI:

    1995 Ford F350 specs:

    Curb Weight 5,342 lbs.
    Payload Capacity (Std/Max) 4570/0
    Towing Capacity (Std/Max) 10000/10000

    Comments?

Thanks again everyone for your help. Well... i realized a decent (not rust bucket or (ab)used) plow truck was out of my price range so i got a brand new basic 4x4 truck. Heavy duty used trucks with plow are just outta my price range BUT i could use a truck anyway for towing the Fcar and tools to track events.

Since there is a Ford vs Chevy vs. Japanese thing here, will avoid saying what i got... but i like it and THAT is what counts.

Now where to i get the Hobbs thing pissing on that other brand of vehicle ;)
