It looks like I'll be getting this M3 as soon as mine sells. I'd like to see a carfax for it before I head up to look at it though. Thanks a million in advance! (last time I swear).

Go to your dealer and have them either give you the history or if they won't have them tell you if it's been in a wreck. After a smash the car would have to go to the dealer and have the codes cleared.

    Accident
CARFAX receives information on accidents in most states when an official police report is filed. Not all accidents are reported to the Police. The level of detail in the accident record varies by state depending on the state's accident report requirements. CARFAX recommends you obtain a vehicle inspection from your dealer or an independent mechanic for any car involved in an accident.
According to the National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 2003 edition, 12% of the 243 million registered vehicles in the U.S. were involved in an accident in 2002. Over 90% of these were considered minor or moderate.
CARFAX depends on public and private sources for its accident data. Each one of these sources has different processing times. CARFAX can only report what is in our database on 28.Jul.2006 19:13:31. New data will result in a change to this report.

    New York Police Reports:

Do not include an assessment of damage severity
Are required if the estimated damage exceeds $1000
Are released to CARFAX approximately 3 months after the accident date. At times, New York may have a backlog that will affect how quickly some accident records are displayed on the Vehicle History Report.

    First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.

    Inspections
Many states or counties require annual or biennial emissions and/or safety inspections. Odometer readings are collected at the time of the inspection.

    New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.

    Not Actual Mileage Title
When the seller certifies, under the Truth-in-Mileage Act, that the odometer reading does not reflect the vehicle's actual mileage. This may occur because the odometer was tampered with, broken, or replaced.

    Ownership History
CARFAX defines an owner as an individual or business that possesses and uses a vehicle. Not all title transactions represent changes in ownership. To provide estimated number of owners, CARFAX proprietary technology analyzes all the events in a vehicle history. Estimated ownership is available for vehicles manufactured after 1994 and titled solely in the US including Puerto Rico. Dealers sometimes opt to take ownership of a vehicle and are required to in the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Please consider this as you review a vehicle's estimated ownership history.

    Title Issued
A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of ownership. Each title has a unique number. Each title or registration record on a CARFAX report does not necessarily indicate a change in ownership. In Canada, a registration and bill of sale are used as proof of ownership.

    Truth-in-Mileage Act
The Truth in Mileage Act (TIMA) of 1986 requires a seller to disclose the vehicle's mileage on the title when ownership is transferred. Congress enacted this Act to prohibit odometer tampering and to protect consumers from mileage fraud. Under this act, sellers must disclose any issues with the vehicle's odometer. These disclosures translate into the Exceed Mechanical Limits and Not Actual Mileage titles.

This could easily be a mistake by the NJ DMV or the owner of the car. A "Not Actual Mileage" title is at the discretion of the titler. There's a little box to check off. Apparently, people accidentally check it off all the time.

In any case, the NJ DMV have screwed up titles for me THREE FRIGGIN TIMES. First they put 232k miles in for a car that only had 32k miles on it. Later, I got the famous "Not Actual Mileage" for my Esprit S4s. I finally learned and caught another mistake with a third car while I was still at the DMV.

I still have to drive to Trenton to get my Esprit title corrected. What are the odds that CarFAX will ever be "clean" for my car? How much is this going to cost me? I get pissed just thinking about it.
