  2. 'Weren't quite such an abberation as you make it out to be. There were numerous variations of driver points earnings from the get-go of F1.

The best 4, 5, and 6 points scoring of the season were used through '66. The split "halves" were used '67 thru 79; the worse result from each "half" being dropped. '81-90, the best 11 of the season were used. All points accrued there after were used.

Most I know felt being able to drop a bad race or two was a great option as unavoidables (being taken out by someone, fer instance) would lessen it's affect on the championships..... ;)

Absolutely: but if you take the seventies for instance, each season a driver only had to drop two results if he scored in all races (one result per half-season) and suddenly in 1979, he had to drop seven...
    so in:
1970: 11 results scored, out of 13 races
    1971: 9 out of 11
    1972: 10 out of 12
    1973: 13 out of 15
    1974: 13 out of 15
    1975: 12 out of 14
    1976: 14 out of 16
    1977: 15 out of 17
    1978: 14 out of 16
    ...and then, 1979: 8 out of 15!

    Rgds

Carlos Reutemann hospitalized again in intensive care

Just about ten days after being discharged following a haemorrhage in the digestive system, the former Ferrari driver was once again hospitalized in intensive care for dehydration problems linked to anemia.

Senator of the Argentine Republic and former Formula 1 driver, Carlos Reutemann, was once again admitted to the intensive care unit of the Santa Fe hospital, just a few weeks after his discharge.

A medical bulletin released by the Sanatorium Santa Fe informed that: "Yesterday afternoon, Senator Carlos A. Reutemann presented a fever attack with repercussions on his general condition. Due to this new complication, it was decided to transfer him to the intensive care unit. of this institution ".

"His prognosis is confidential and the diagnostic tests are still ongoing," the statement concludes.

On May 31, it was reported that the former Ferrari driver had been hospitalized again, but in an ordinary ward, due to a dehydration problem linked to the anemia he suffers from.

This is the second time Reutemann has been hospitalized after suffering a digestive hemorrhage in early May and was discharged on May 21 after being in intensive care.

Reutemann participated in 146 Formula 1 Grand Prix between 1972 and 1982, in which he took 12 wins, six pole positions and 46 podiums.

In 1981, with Williams, he was one step away from winning the World Championship, closing the season with only one point behind Nelson Piquet, who was crowned champion with Brabham.

You triggered another memory of no points being awarded although the driver finished fourth outright in a race legal car. Strange days back then ;).

Carlos Reutemann's health status worsens again

Carlos Reutemann is still hospitalized in intensive care and his situation has worsened in the last hours after his kidney function deteriorated.

Carlos Reutemann's health situation raises concern after the 1981 F1 world runner-up suffered new episodes of digestive bleeding while in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a city health center in the last hours from Santa Fe (Argentina).

Reutemann had been hospitalized on May 5 in the midst of anemia and dehydration, but his condition deteriorated due to other factors, such as digestive bleeding and deterioration of his kidney function.

At that time, he remained in hospital for 17 days, most of them in intensive care, a period during which he was transferred by helicopter to the city of Rosario to continue his treatment before being discharged on May 21.

However, nine days later, the former Ferrari and Williams driver , among others, had to be admitted again to the hospital in Santa Fe in the common care sector due to dehydration, a consequence of anemia. He has been hospitalized since then, but since June 21 he has been in the ICU and almost two weeks ago they stopped issuing daily reports on his situation.

According to what the Telam news agency of Argentina reports , Reutemann had "small improvements, but in the last hours the reappearance of bleeding worsened his condition."

The agency also indicated that from the family environment they assured that the current senator for the province of Santa Fe is "very bad."

Reutemann contested 146 Formula 1 Grand Prix between 1972 and 1982, during which he achieved 12 victories, six pole positions and 46 podiums.

In 1981, racing with Williams , he was on the verge of the world championship when the season ended just one point behind Nelson Piquet, who took the title with the Brabham team.

After his goodbye as a pilot, he began a political career in Argentina, in which he became governor of the province of Santa Fe in two terms and since 2003 he has been a National Senator.

Carlos Reutermann has passed away at age 79. RIP.

Ex F1 racer Carlos Reutemann dies at age 79

Carlos Reutemann, runner-up in the 1981 Formula 1 world championship, has passed away at the age of 79 after being hospitalised for over a month.

Reutemann's condition had deteriorated in the last couple of days after he suffered further issues with haemorrhaging while in the intensive care unit of a health centre in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina.

The former F1 driver and current Senator in Argentina had been hospitalised on 30 May and was moved to the ICU on 21 June, remaining there ever since.

Previously Reutemann spent 17 days in the hospital during May.

He was admitted with anaemia and dehydration, but his condition worsened due to previous issues with gastrointestinal bleeding and deteriorating kidney function. His problems were related to liver cancer he was diagnosed with in 2017.

Reutemann’s death is a major loss for Argentina as he was the most successful driver of the South American country in Formula 1 after the initial path set by the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio and Jose Froilan Gonzalez in the 1950s.

Reutemann was able to excel in F1 during a ten-year span between 1972 and 1982 in a competitive era for the series.

The Argentinian drove for big teams like Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus and Williams and won 12 grands prix.

His victories at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 1975 and in Monaco in 1980 stand out in his career.

He also achieved 46 podiums, six pole positions, six fastest laps, 22 front row starts and 66 point finishes in a time when only top 6 received points.

In 1981, while racing for Williams, Reutemann came within one point of the world title having led for much of the season, losing out in the end to Brazilian Nelson Piquet.

He also finished third in the championship on three occasions - in 1975, 1978 and 1980 with Brabham, Ferrari and Williams, respectively.

Following his retirement from F1 after the first two races of the 1982 season and having also made two World Rally Championship starts with two podium finishes in Argentina (1980 and 1985), Reutemann turned his attention to politics in his country.

He served two terms as governor of his home province of Santa Fe and in 2003 he was offered the opportunity to run for the Argentinian presidency, but rejected the candidacy.

He’s been a member of the Senate since that year until his death.

In the late 1970's my Mother was working in a department store in Toronto. Carlos Reutemann came in with a small entourage and she was the only person in the store that spoke Spanish so she spent a few hours showing him around and helping him with his shopping. She remembers him as a gracious gentleman who was pleasant to be around and also good looking. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Met him a few times while he was driving for Williams. He had this incredible movie star looks and he was wicked fast. Sometimes too fast for his teammate Jones.

He will live on in my living room, albeit in 1/12 scale.

Mario hits the nail on the head. Lole is one of the uncrowned champions.

Normally I'm not a fan of the coulda/shoulda/woulda game but Carlos is one of those guys who missed out by so little/circumstances that F1's history books could have easily looked differently. He is in a group with Stirling Moss, Gilles Villeneuve, Ronnie Peterson and a few others I'm currently not thinking of.

Not to forget how he on two occasions took part in his home WRC round in factory machinery, and came third on both.
    1980 in a Gp.IV Fiat 131 Abarth and in 1985 a Gp.B Peugeot 205 T16. Another sign of his sublime talent*.
