    Greetings Sports Fans,

The Chicago Alfa Romeo Owners Club invite you to the 2006 Spring Speed May 6-7, 2006 at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet.

We appreciate your support last spring and hope to see many of you again this year. The format will be the same with open lapping in groups and 2 touring sessions during lunch.

For lapping we require a Snell 90 or better helmet, though this is the last year we will allow S90 with the 2005's now out. We strongly urge you to have a Snell95 or better. Open cars require a roll bar 2" over the drivers head and fixed in 4 points. New brake pads and fluid are recommended.

For touring no roll bar or helmet is required. Touring is driving the track at public highway speed in a safe and non-aggressive manor. We recommend all cars be safe for street use (no worn tires etc) and you remove all loose objects as they will fly around the car as you corner.

If we get the kind of entries we did last year, the first touring session will be all Italian again.

Please see the CAROC web site for an entry form and details. http://www.caroc.com/events/autobahn_06.html

If you have any questions or just need more information, you can reply here, send me a PM or use the email address or phone number on the entry form.

We look forward to seeing you at Autobahn in May.

Peter, I tweaked the title a bit and gave you a sticky so it fits better into the "Chicago calendar of events".

As one of the few guys on here who came to your event last year, I had a lot of fun (even when being black flagged). I like the Autobahn track a lot. Hopefully you guys have better weather this time.

PS: Just bought a Snell 2005 helmet. FCA made Snell 2000 the standard for 2007. Still mulling over a HANS device. They're so darn expensive.

    Thanks Andreas.

Are you entering the lapping this year? You don't need a helmet if you just plan to tour. A Snell 2005 is a good investment.

As far as the HANS goes - and this would apply to lapping/racing days - in my opinion, it's the single greatest advance in safety equipment in the last 20 years.

We all learn something from every accident. Sadly more from such tragadies as Dale Sr. I'm not a fan of NASCAR but every track driver owes them a debt of gratitude for developing the HANS.

Consider the cost of a timing belt replacement on your car. Something around $3k if I heard correctly. Why do you replace the belt? Because it's insurance against failure and catastrophic damage to your car. A HANS is about $1100 (the ISAAC is a little less) and also insurance against catastrophic damage to your body.

So ask yourself this. Would you put $3K of insurance into your car but not $1100 of insurance into yourself?

Sorry, won't sign up this year, but that's not a statement about your event at all. My MO is more that I like to try out different things all the time: Different cars, different tracks. Before I return to Autobahnclub there are a bunch of other tracks I like to do. But that's just me.

I might join you guys at a Road America event someday though. Although I have done that already in a Formula car, but never in my 308.

Get a HANS device. I understand they are expensive but it is a HUGE help if God forbid you ever have an incident. I bought one when I started racing a bunch because I know of two local guys who almost killed themselves because they did not have the HANS device. One spent quite some time in the hospital and if he had the HANS he would have probably walked right out of the car. I too was at first contemplating spending the money on something else but just kept thinking of the people I knew that could have saved a lot of pain and agony if they had one. After wearing one, I don't think I could ever get in another race car without it! Just my two cents

    Bump.

1 week to go. I hope to see many of you there.

If you're just touring, don't worry about sending in the form ahead of time. Just show up around 11:30 and we'll get you registered and on track. The weather looks to be better this year.

Am I allowed to come and watch/take pictures? We have finals next week so I probably won't be able to anyway, but if I force myself to study and it looks like I will do well then I may have time. I really want to go back to Chicago before I return to Ohio.

The bus leaves the South Barrington area around 10:15-ish tomorrow. If you would like to drive to the track with us PM me for directions.

    Thanks,

Thank you to those that came out. The event was a great success. The all-Italian touring session was a real treat to see.

Hopefully there will be some pictures posted soon. Especially of the all-Italian front straight caravan on Sunday.

Thanks again for coming. Hope to see you at our other events.
