That is a good example of the old artistic saying that "form follows function."

The Porsche 9R3 (aka LMP2000) race car from which the Carrera GT took its V10 engine. Initially planned as an Formula 1 engine, the unit was enlarged to 5.5 liters for this application, identical to the Carrera GT concept and very close to the final 5.7-liter production CGT engine (which was supposedly enlarged again for slightly better street drivability). Unfortunately the 9R3 itself did not race, cancelled in part due to the ailing company's negotiations with Volkswagen at the time, who had a hand in the lucrative Cayenne project and did not want formidable competition from Porsche at Le Mans for their competitive Audi team.

Another interesting note, the later "9R6" racing car was similarly the source of the 918 Spyder's V8. That car was better known as the RS Spyder!

Sterling, or anyone else, do you have any information on the background of the CGT engine? Specifically why and how it was designed.

Over the years we've heard people on forums and youtube give an "explanation". Stories range from Formula 1 to LMP1, and everything in between. But for some reason I don't feel like I've ever learned the truth behind this engine.

Yes, see the 9R3 post I did above. Prior to that project, it started life at a much smaller displacement as a planned Formula 1 engine.

Carrera GT prototype races around Weissach in this video entitled “Director’s Cut.”

Porsche teased the upcoming Carrera GT supercar with a blast around the Weissach test track on a snowy day. Note the non-production wheels, mirrors, etc. on this pre-production prototype finished in what would become Fayence Yellow!

Sound on for this one... follow my Instagram @SterlingSackey for more CGT content like this daily!

^^^ The snow plow driver at that track must have also been a racer, too. Notice on the video that the snow was always plowed back to the maximum extent on every curve apex and entry/exit.

Perhaps those portions had been "plowed" by a much faster, more agile snowplow earlier in the day. :D

A short video called "The Making of the Carrera GT" by Porsche. Part 1 shows many aspects of the development & testing process, and part 2 shows the production line assembly of the car. Enjoy!

Was able to take a look at the 2000 Carrera GT Concept at the Petersen Automotive Museum this weekend. It’s quite something to see this car in the flesh, 1 of 2 of these concept versions (and apparently the only one remaining) that lent the production Carrera GT its classic styling & proportions. Unveiled at the Lourve in Paris in the year 2000, one of these concepts drove the city streets with a police escort, rounding the Arc du Triomphe as it went. The car then went on to the Paris Motor Show to much fanfare. This was a running and driving car, not just a display piece - equipped with a 5.5-liter version of the V10 which would be used in the production car in an enlarged 5.7-liter form.

    What an important car!

Thanks for the great pics Sterling. The prototype is so very different. In fact I’d prefer it over the final design with its interesting features. That shifter is different.

Interesting details that are different but overall design seems similar. I like the fuel cap....I like the final design wheels better as well as the rear deck lid being full mesh over the engine.
I certainly don’t know why they added the silly ash tray in the center console.

Very cool that you got to see this. Can't really say that I like it better or worse than the production car. There's video on the interweb somewhere of that drive through Paris. IIRC, it was raining that night. I'll see if I can find it.

You are correct, it was cold, rainy, and windy on the drive to the Lourve museum through the Parisian streets. Poor Walter Rohrl (who was driving) has had to endure some serious hazards on his job at Porsche. :)

The video you speak of can be found in Part 1 of the "Making of Carrera GT" YouTube video I posted a couple posts above.
