I've heard more stories about owners trying to get out from under a car loan, as the economy softens.
Insurance investigators are getting very suspicious when a car with a big loan balance burns.

The R8 pic looks like it may have been an engine fire... Who parks their car like that?

While the article seems like a bit of a stretch making the connection with these specific incidents, this particular quote is some good advice regardless:

"while there may not be a clear connection between the state of the economy and the recent spike in attacks, owners might not want to park their supercar on the street anytime soon."

At least don't let it too far out of sight.

another big issue are fake lemon law suits. owners are bringing thier cars in with a problem and when the dealer fixes it they "re-break it" the next day and say it wasn't fixed properly. in friendly lemon law states like CA this is a big problem.

With the prices dropping rather alarmingly, I remember reading and advert on one of the internet car sales site about if the car wasn't going to be sold it will be torched - this may have been a joke but if the car was insured for more than it was worth then I can see that this sort of thing can happen.

You must be a car dealer.

The lesson I draw from the article is not so much don't park your exotic in the street, but more like, don't park you exotic right outside a bar full of drunk people. Also, don't park it in Dubai, and get an extinguisher system.

There have been numerous reports of abandoned luxury cars in Dubai - e.g 3000 abandoned cars outside Dubai Intl airport alone with keys in the ignition.

Dubai is emptying out of expats, and many of them are fleeing high-end houses/cars/toys.
