so no flames meant; I have been contacted and contacted a few folks on this forum re cars for sale; and almost all of them responded, albeit very slooooowly, and one even sent me pics and reached out to me after seeing my interest in a 456, AND LIVES like 4 miles from me...and then weeks go by and when you contact them they do not respond or as on said, "I am not sure I now want to sell"......ok, I get that, then why advertise?

One said he was getting a price on a belt service as the car needs it and he said everyone has asked...10 days ago, still waiting to hear on that; I am not mad but more like you are wasting your time and everyone else's getting PM's and then not answering them....my .02, dog

Sometimes I go weeks without noticing I have a private message. Maybe a larger notice or an email somehow? Is there an email prompt for the private message system?

I'm one of those guys you're talking to, as you know.

I guess part of my hesitation with you is that you're looking at a ton of different models, you are going in 100 directions on it. I did suggest you go drive a couple of them to narrow down your choices. A 456 and a 360 are VERY different animals in very different price ranges.

I've spent considerable time with three other prospective buyers here and have gotten an interested feeling from all of them, including you. But, I'm not a phone chatty kind of guy, so even though you sent me your cell number, I didn't call you back, I sent another PM.

I did, I think, send you the link to my album full of car photos. If I didn't here it is now.

    https://picasaweb.google.com/110696311788860785343/360?authkey=Gv1sRgCOaf57uzpcfslQE

the shots with the 360 wheels are a couple years old, the 430 wheels were taken ten days ago.

As to why you're getting some wishy washy answers? All I can say if from my POV, if I don't get my asking price, my car isn't going anywhere. I've posted it at a very reasonable price, I've even had a couple dealers contact me and offer me in the range of my price, so I'm not above market. I don't need to sell my car. I'll sell it in the right deal, at the right price, or I'll keep it for another season. And I think a lot of guys feel that way right now. They're feeling out the market. IF it's lower than what they think they SHOULD get, they are backing out.

Oh, and on your last question that I think we have up in the air, "What's a belt service gonna cost?" I have not found the time to call Algar and find out. That one is my fault, and I'll get that done tomorrow.

i keep .zip files on my desktop when i list a car for sale. That way i can very quickly reply and send pics / scans without having to "dig".

Since most of these cars are bought cash, i am used to just the opposite as a seller: people who bug the hell out of you for pics, Title / repair records scans, and then you never hear back from them.

I STILL have people calling me on the 208GT4 that i sold to the nice man in Argentina months ago !!! :)

Buying or selling, I think anything at these price points takes time to complete a transaction, as both parties want to be sure of their Due Dilligence before the cash / wire transfer takes place.

    just my opinion.

I thing there is genuine interest, just not anything specific yet.

I NEVER want to discourage a guy from exploring his muse, and this is certainly that. but, I'm not going to invest a ton of time in that project.

Pictures and some info? Sure, want the scoop? Hit a cars and coffee and talk to the guys. But I'm not phone chatty, and don't really want to do 20 minutes on, "Why I love my 360 and think you should buy it" with anyone, not just dogdoc.

A lot of sellers drag their feet because they really don't want to sell and probably also hate the process. If they sense someone is a tire kicker they'll be a little slow too. If your clear on what you want finding YOUR car shouldn't be a big deal and either should pulling the trigger. Good luck.

You would never have been able to buy a car 25 years ago when Hemmings was your only resource, and a PPI consisted of flying out to see the car and driving it.

my guess would be a lot of people on here (myself included) would only sell our cars for the right price. i.e. more than what the same models sell in the open market. I think part of this is because we really love our cars and would have a hard time parting with them, and the other is because our cars are usually really well cared for with documents work and good clean modifications, hence we feel they are worth more than the average car.

I think part of the problem is you have two types of buyers - one wants a particular model and nothing else will do (most fchatters) and another has 'X' to spend and isn't particular about the model. I think dogdoc falls into the latter, which isn't a bad thing. He's just more vocal about it. I've shopped like that many times, and nearly always ended up with something fun.

Dogdoc, you should definitely come out to one of the Atlanta C&C events. The Italian Car Day is coming up soon too, and there will be loads of different cars to see and talk about. Check out the SE section below, there's always someone posting about the next event.

FWIW I can be either fast or slow responding to someone when I'm selling, depending on whether I'm in a rush to sell or how the potential buyer comes across. Some people I won't even respond to because they just sound fishy (craigslist responders mostly).

I have found in my limited Ferrari buying experience that MOST owners are insulted by the "how about $15K less?" approach....

No one wants to part with an exciting car, no matter the reason.

I have always been very respectful of the "ask" and you either get to that number, or get another car.

With that approach I HAVE had sellers cut the price, once thaey thought it was a "good home" or something...that points out how strong the emotions run over these machines. I don't think that's it's a good idea to do much haggling...move up or down the model/year range if you must....but low balling is very emotional for the seller.

dogdoc is new to Ferrari and I'm sure he has no basis upon which to have my perspective....seems a nice enough guy.

He could call the dealer for the service info, but we ALL know how things are discovered once it's 'on the rack" that render that bid almost hypothetical.

    "What's your bottom number?"

    "Okay, thanks"

    Not much time wasted there.

He needs to go to an event, meet a crowd f enthusiastic owners, and hang out.
Many people don;t mind taking time to talk and in most cases give a ride or even driving opportunity.

I also might be slow to realize that I have a PM, and don't hang on every posting on various web forums. I also might be slow to respond if the person contacting me doesn't come across as serious. I frequently get delayed in doing simple tasks for people when higher priorities simply take over, so maybe I have more understanding for those folks who are delayed in responding with what is probably not critical information. Anyone can call a service provider to get a price on a belt service and I wouldn't expect a private seller to give me that price.

Plenty of research can be done without becoming a pest to those with items listed for sale. I'd also suggest trolling the local dealer(s) as well as going to the car events in the area to decide on what model is better for the buyer.

dogdoc - why on earth would you call out, in an open forum, fellow FChatters?

Why not email/call/PM them and ask THEM why are taking so long, instead of ranting about it in the open for everyone to see? Do you really want an answer to your question?

This thread, IMO, will not get you the answers any quicker.

Reminds me of the story about the father and son bulls on the top of the hill looking down at all the heifers....

Advice: Buying your first Ferrari can be a bit overwhelming. Focus on one car. I believe you originally wanted the 550? Ask a few detailed, deliberate and focused questions from current and past owners based on your countless hours of research. Don't ask every question you can think of about every model made from 1997 through 2004.

Remember, a seller doesn't have to sell to you or anyone he doesn't want to. He wants the transaction to go as smoothly as possible, before and after the sale. I had several offers to buy my car but picked the one that made me feel good. He and I are still extremely pleased about it.

A Ferrari should be a fast yes/no decision based on desire and ability to purchase. If it takes convincing or numerous conversations to discern interest (model, etc..) then I would stay away from Ferrari as it could be regrettable.

I think some homework on a particular car/model is always a good idea.

My wife thinks I'm impulsive. I say decisive :)

What's with all the negativity? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Rob created this forum so that owners and enthusiasts alike could chat with like-minded people about all things Ferrari - and that includes asking all the right/pertinent questions before pulling the trigger.

The Doc has been into cars for about as long as I've been alive (sorry, Doc, if this makes you feel old), but is only just now getting into Ferraris. Experience with Jaguars and muscle cars has taught him to do his due diligence. And that's what he's doing.

Not too along ago, he asked about PPIs; someone referred him to me and we've been in contact ever since. We've exchanged a number of PMs, e-mails, texts and phone calls, regarding cars for sale, typical issues with a given model, reputable independent mechanics and dealers, etc. I informed the good doctor of my services, and while he hasn't yet taken me up on them, he's already sent me a (generous) check for my time over the phone.

If I recall correctly, he's already had three PPIs done, all of which have offered good reason(s) to pass on the car(s) in question.

He has a specific price bracket in mind, and as he continues to explore the marque and the market, he's learned of other cars in his price range. So, naturally, he's looking into all of his options. If I had a specific amount of money, I'd know exactly what I'd want - but that's because I've obsessed with these cars for years. He's just learning.

When I was in the market for a motorcycle, I wasn't looking for a specific marque or model - just a sport bike. I found everything from a Ducati Monster to streeted track bikes to vintage cruisers - and I asked questions about each one in an attempt to become as knowledgeable and informed as possible before spending my hard-earned money. No one gave me a hard time, so why is everyone giving this guy ****? It reflects very poorly on this forum, and is a throbbing and grotesque indication as to why this place has so many lurkers, and so many people afraid to pose questions.

    Have to agree NNO -

If you dont want to sell, take the add out - if you want to sell, respond.

Many of times i have been wishy washy myself - but when i pulled the trigger, i usually did it very quick.

No seller, and No buyer likes wasting there time - but patience is always needed, as this should be a fun experience for both parties -

If people act like this with cars, god help you in how you react to a wife (which you cant get rid of so easy) :D

what we have to do as community - is get rid of the BOTTOM FEEDERS !
