Have you ever had a talk with someone about cars and they start telling you what cars look dated to them? Obviously there is no right or wrong to it. It's just someone's opinion. I had this discussion last night with a friend of mine that lives in Vegas. Without going into a long story he felt that the testarossa, countach, Diablo and 308 were all dated looking cars and looked ridiculous in 2014. I told him I felt the exact opposite. I feel any of those cars would look good on the road today. When I have seen an occasional testarossa or diablo on the road I could not take my eyes off of it.

He is repeating what he read someone else wrote at least 10 years ago.
These cars looked "dated" back then but not anymore and market forces only reinforce that fact today.

348 looks dated as well, people often mix it up with the Testarossa

I think there's a correlation with how often you see these cars on the road with how "dated" they look and I can tell you, a Countach and even a TR are rare to see.

I also think that if Kia and Hyundai can imitate it, than it will look dated very quickly. Below is an example of an E Class, S Type and the Kia version.

There's also an example of a Ferrari from the same era (2004) that is (1) not often seen and (2) not easily imitated. Can anyone say the 430 looks dated?

On another note, Audi make so many facelifts to their own products that within a couple of years they are outdated.

    It works like this

    modern becomes dated becomes classic

The 246 Dino gt was considered "dated" when the 308 came out.

Classic is what you would call it today.

"Dated" is a compliment. Most modern cars look terrible.

    Hear, hear! :)

I'd love to drive a "dated" car with side stakes and pop-up headlights. ;)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I think it all depends on your age and experience. Living in Vegas, most folks out there are not used to anything that is not 5 years old or newer...

the 360's -430's, Californias and 612's all have a dated look - kind of blah.. mitsubishi like....IMHO.

I'm clearly a classic guy... but the 458 and La Ferrari as well as the 550- 599 are all great looking cars!

OTOH, I've never thought the Testarossa looked very good ever....ugly from the side and brutal in the rear. Especially odd considering how beautiful the Boxer was/is.

Some cars make the transition and others don't. Those that don't might be called "dated". It's all in the eyes of the beholder.

Somehow the Diablo looks more Miami Vice than even the Testarossa. I think parachute pants are required. The late Countach with wings on the front and back, and tacked on fender flares, is also pretty dated, IMHO.

I do like the early Countach, though. It's easy to forget that the original was a work of art.

It's not my favorite, but era-specific styling cues sometimes push a car into the classic category. Tail fins on old Cadillacs are dated, but nowadays those are the only Cadillacs anyone remembers. Whale tails on Porsche 930s are dated, but market demand for those is intense, and prices reflect it. Porsche even brought back the brushed Targa hoop on the 991. The wedge concept, a la Boxer/308/Esprit, was very 1970s, but now it looks exciting again next to the endless jellybean and origami designs.

What may look dated about modern cars are the "fierce"-looking head lamps, where every model seems to need to look more like an angry robot than the last one did. Lexus, Ferrari 458, any Lambo... I think it's all overdone and will look silly in 10 years.

Other doomed-to-be-dated stuff: Matte paint, blacked out wheels, LED rows under headlamps, and Aston Martin look-alike grilles. Chrome spinners, plastic cladding...

I hate those LED row lighting. Everyone's doing it. Reminds me of the clear taillight with mirror backing of the early 2000's.

    Form follows function.

Good form and proportion will always be in style. Note how the germal braun appliances are always in style with their minimalism? Same with cars. What looks dated is the wedge. You had the changeover to functional Aerodynamics in the 90s and sorry to say it's here to stay. Why does the stealth fighter look so angular? Function. Lambo copies this function in their design nicely, but might look dated over time and when batman goes out of vogue.

Hate to say it but 348, testarossa and their strakes unique styling element makes them look dated. Its form but not function. Same with exposed aluminum or chrome on the outside of the car. Too much distracting reflection while driving for current cars which is why 365 has a classic vibe.

308 gt/4 and mondials look dated to me. Testarossa looks somewhat dated, 512TR doesn't (front driving lights and black lower accent dates it most for me). The harder and sharper the angles, the more dated they look to me. Example is early Esprit vs. a late one, early ones look really dated, later ones don't.
