I see a lot of debate and conversation around the standard v Option rim on the 488in particular, and when speccing my car I opted for the forged "option" rims after doing a bit of research.

But as the topic comes up a fair bit I thought I would share the different production techniques of rims with you, so as we can all be better informed.

When I made my final decision the 2 critical factors for me in this order were Strength and weight. Strength is important as on British roads we have lots of potholes, and I have cracked 2 AMG rims in the last 9 months alone on my Mercedes, and weight because reducing the unsprung weight can make a noticeable difference even at road speeds.

This article I found is one of the better ones for comparing the wheel types as it keeps it nice and simple and is factual.

    Hope it helps

The link may take you to an ad for tire rack if it ones click on continue to site, it doesn't seem to like to copy and paste the direct URL

Remember with Rims particularly it is not all about looks! Not all Rims are created equal!

Solid article outlaying the basics but there is still much more to learn. One thing Tire Rack doesn't talk about is the importance of proper engineering and R&D that goes into a wheel, let alone FEA (Finite element analysis), impact testing through certifications (like TUV, JWL/VIA, though they do touch on this):

What they do say is true, and though that won't have much effect on our UK members, the United States does not have any regulations for wheel safety. I could be some Joe Schmo who has access to blank wheels and a CNC machine, cut a design real fast, and I could legally sell it in the United States without passing any safety testing, without doing any FEA, without doing literally anything, as long as you have a product to sell, go right ahead. That's another topic though.

To help elaborate a bit more on that Tire Rack article is this Youtube Video which gives a nice overview of different construction processes.

    Hi Jurrian

That is an excellent video, thank you for sharing. Particularly liked the comparison to the ice skater that kind of sums it up from a performance angle, and also the strength of a cast is really important in areas that have potholes, as the rims are less likely to crack and more likely to either absorb or take a dent that possibly could be repaired.

I think we are all in agreement it's not just about looks, particularly with Rims.

    Have a nice evening.

    Regards

    Michael
