I forgot to mention, this is the car with the imploded fuel tank, if anyone of u remember that thread. Also there's pop-pop on the left-hand exhaust on downshifting.

i saw another post 7 years ago, saying that the glowing red exhaust is caused by a failing fuel pump and that pump is deliverying 10% of what it is supposed to delivery. Meaning that a lean mixture would resulting in a unburnt fuel in cat? I am so confused

Before you start changing everything, get a set of compression readings to be sure you don’t have a leaking valve. Leaking exhaust valve or timing out will cause this

there can only be one thing causing popping in the exhaust - gas

doesn't make sense that a weak or failing fuel pump would be pumping excess gas into the exhaust to me. Injectors are last line of regulation after fuel pressure regulator.

So you are now back to injector or a coil. Take the bottom cover off the engine, start car from cold and take the exhaust temps using a laser as the engine warms up- you are looking for the odd one out

another update, a SD2 check revealed that the cylinder 2 has misfire, although CEL has not come on. I am guessing for some mild misfire the CEL won't come on. Must have some conditions to meet for the ECU to flip a CEL..

I have new coils. And I have visually inspected the injectors by pulling them off and crank the engine----injectors are oozing out gasline just fine by naked eye.

Since in a previous post you mentioned new coils and plugs were installed, you could try swapping the coil with an adjacent cylinder and see if the misfire moves to that cylinder. If not, then try moving injectors. While you are doing these procedures, I would be examining the condition of the connector plugs to cylinder #2, and the pins, to ensure they are okay. I have heard of pins not locking in the connector, so each time the connection was made the pin was pushed back not making good connection. (btw, I am not a mechanic, just a hack do it yourselfer)

Any misfire is going to put unburnt fuel down the exhaust.. Any way of checking the supply volts at each coil

so i did an experiment today.

I have two identical Modenas. what i mean by "identical" is that not only the version is the same (euro) and not only the year is the same, but the serial number is so close that if I look up the part numbers, all of the parts are the same. One car is a completely healthy one. The other one is the one with glowing red cat.

I put the 2 cars side by side in a quiet place. 2 friends each sitting in each car. I asked them to rev them at 3000rpm, 4000rpm, 5000rpm.

i observed very very distinct difference in the loudness of the sound.

Does that mean the glowing red cat car has a clogged cat in all likelihood?

Or one of them is misfiring?

i ran the car for 200 miles and no misfiring code. So i am not sure.

i can't hear any misfiring although 8 cyl engine's misfire can be hard to detect

I think I would be solving the problem of the glowing red cat before racking up another 200 miles.

it only becomes red when I drive it like i stole it. Drive normally like a grandma the car will be fine.

if you have 2 identical 360s and you're concerned one of the cats is no good and you know the other one is good, why not swap the 2 cats between both cars and see if the good car has glowing cats after the swap.

He could also remove the catalyst that glows to inspect for damage internally. But there may still be a problem with the way the engine is running. Glowing catalysts are usually an issue with something the engine is doing. Are there exhaust manifold test ports on the 360 exhaust manifolds (there are on a 355)? If so, check the exhaust readings. Maybe there is a cam timing, fuel or ignition problem that is not yet detected.

Now you have good compression readings, changed coils etc we seem to be back to injectors.
Either an injector is pouring fuel into 1 unit or you have a problem with the fuel metering to the units- not sure how it works so cant help on that one.

I would be very tempted to pull the injectors and get them cleaned and balanced.
It’s not a lot of work, and pretty cheap. On 15 yr old cars, it should prob be part of a maintenance regime. It was a pretty common thing to do on our twin turbo stealth/vr4s.

And I’d still be tempted to swap the coil from the offending cylinder with one from another bank to see what happens.

After that, I’d focus on the cat.
