    Re : 348 '94 Spider

If I replace the Cats with the cat bypass pipes, are the EGT probes and their ECUs still needed ?

Will the engine ECUs be happy with no signal ?

You don't need them. You can remove the probes and ECU's with no ill effects.

For a 348, you can remove the thermal couple and the TCU altogether and not cause the engine ECU to go into a titzy. Shh, this is what is happening with my 94 Challenge. The engine is fine.

I cannot say the same about the 5.2 Motronic on a 355.

    Here is what I know.

The Motronic 2.7 in a 348 only monitors the exhaust gas temperature via the EGT ecu. It only adjusts how the engine runs if the temperature exceeds a set value for a certain amount of time (the limp mode). I have been running my 348 with the EGT ECU (aka: cat ecu) completely removed for years. As a matter of fact I had it pass the California emissions test the year before last, with no EGT/cat ECU, and with the thermocouples completely removed and the bungs capped. They have zero effect on how the Motronic manages normal operation on my 348 as far as I can tell, and have observed, for over 10 years of running it with out the stupid cat ECUs. The Motronic will store a silent engine code indicating that it is not receiving a signal from the EGT/cat ECUs, meaning it will not illuminate the check engine light, but if you pull the codes it will be present (code 4121).

    Having said that.

The Mortonic 5.2 will illuminate the check engine light if it is not getting a signal form the cat ecu. One of the 355 owners posted a very nice DIY thread on how to fabricate your own cat ecu bypass. You can find it in the 355 do it yourself sticky.

Since you have a '94, and are running a Motronic 2.7, I would deduct that you could disconnect the EGT ecu and not have it affect the running of the engine. You could try and disconnect the EGT ecu and see what it does/does not do, and then let the rest if us know what you find. If it does the same as on a 348, leave it removed and for get about it. If it does not, and acts the same as a 5.2 Motronic, then follow the DIY thread for bypassing it. It's my opinion that you have nothing to worry about because you are running straight pipes and have no catalytic converters to over heat.

Be sure to let us know how it goes.

Youn can take out the probes and ecu on the 2.7 with no ill effects. I removed it all on my 95 f355. They failed and the car would run on 4 cylinders occasionally.
