OK, before the flaming begins I realize that I am in the wrong forum but my model is much closer to a 348 than it is to the previous models which carry the same name. I am about a third of the way through a 30k service on my 89 Mondial t and I pulled the exhaust off to inspect it and make it easier to get at the clutch. Although the underhood label lists it as a Catalyst equipped to my surprise the Cats are empty. Is this possible or did the previous owner hollow them out? I am a certified emission inspector and repair technician and know that on any other vehicle that sports the Catalyst equipped label, empty cats will cause a failure every time. The production date on this unit is July 1989 so it's a late 89 as far as production goes. I guess my real question is, should I start shopping for new convertor's or are they supposed to be empty? Another thing, the harness's that connect to the thermocouples aren't attached to anything in the trunk, is this normal?

If your catalyst pipes have a bulge in them, they should contain proper catalytic cores... unless somebody knocked them out. Some Mondial t models DID have straight pipes instead of cats --- but they are simply straight pipe look quite different from cats. (These are Mondial OEM pipes: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=199215)

I suspect a prior owner used a broomstick to "fix" a problem with the cats.
