Hi all, going through the wiring on a US 308 GTSi 1981 and I’ve found this hidden wiring bypass, I imagine one of the cats isn’t working as it should do given the disconnected wire and the wire bypass on the terminals, apparently the two cream coloured boxes are the electronic system controls for the cats, and the single red box next to them is the tachymetric switch for the solenoid valve, and the my question is if I remove these boxes do I need to make temporary connections to make the car work ? The car is now in France and the pollution control is not as rigorous as when made for the US market, so I’ll be replacing the exhaust system eventually and removing the cats anyway, as well as the EGR valve system, air injection system, warm up valve etc, so this is to find out what electrical bypass I can do in advance of this planned work in progress.

Those boxes control the SLOW DOWN lights on the dash. The cats aren't controlled by anything, they just do their thing as exhaust flows through. That jumper wire probably indicates that the thermocouple is damaged somehow, or maybe the box was giving false indications and has an issue.

As far as I know you can leave the boxes in place or remove them, it shouldn't matter. I would also guess in the US that they are worth something and probably worth you effort not to toss them in the trash. Well, the working one anyway.

    Hi Brian
Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the delay, yes my wording didn’t quite make sense as the of course the cats can’t be controlled, so I guess it’s quite safe to take these out and the cats too.
Do you happen to know if it’s ok to remove the red box (tachymetric switch) which apparently controls the solenoid for the egr valve? I’m planning on removing the egr equipment anyway.
    Thanks
