I red a few scary threads where the Catalytic Converters could be the possible reason for serious engine problems if they break inside. In my knowledge, the cats on my 348 are still the original ones and so I am getting a little paranoid about it. I did the smog test a couple of months ago and the car passed it easily. Does that means my cats are still in good shape ? What are the signs of cats on the verge to go bad ? Any way to check them without taking them down ?

The post you read was probably mine :(, unfortunately the only way to check is to drop the exhaust and look directly inside to see the matrix but this will only show exhaust side not the other where damage might have occurred.

If you passed your emission test you can probably breath a little easier as a failing cat is rare and not as common as you would think. Besides my damage occurred due to my lean mixture, failed cat and high revs that I maintained for a long period of time. If I would of driven her a bit more conservatively my engine damage might not have occurred. Keep your eye on your CEL lights when and if they come on drive conservative and pull the codes

You can still most of the conversion without the light coming on with an abraded substrate in the can.

Here is a more common problem. Cat monolith is loose and rotating in its can. As it grinds against the thermocouple and rotates it will slowly disintegrate. Unless you have fuel control and or valve problems you can't expect the damage you speak of. Maybe!
