I just read in Classic Car magazine that all cars registered before 1st August 1992 don't require catalytic converters and can pass an MOT test without them fitted. Is this true? My fathers' 512TR was officially registered for road use on 7/1/92. Does this mean I can replace the cats with test pipes and pass an MOT?

? anything made / sold after 1974 that was USA legal had cats per Federal law. seems a dot / epa "federalized" BB would have had them fitted when imported .

perhaps the car is now exempt due to age. (depends on state?)

that would be a good thing!

    Only applicable to the UK:

Yes it is true, if the rest of the system (oxygen sensors etc.) is working OK then the car should pass MOT. My pre August 92' has pipes. The guy asked me if it was a CAT car and I said no, just oxy sensors - it was well within the required limits.

Edit: Remember to declare the modified exhaust system to the insurance company.

Except for some early Ferrari 308s that came with thermal reactors instead...

Ministry Of Transport, I suppose the same as the US DOT/DMV. It the annual test all cars over 3 years old have to have here.

AFAIK it is still illegal to remove cats from a car that was originally supplied with them. I had an Evo 190 Merc and it had cats from 1989 and was told categorically that it must retain them to be legal. Although the MOT testers don't check or care about this..! ie They don't have a database on what emission systems your car should have.

All cars after 92 must have cats fitted to them.

Although the number of 355's, 360's running around with de-cats must mean plenty of people get away with it. I'd not like to find out what happens in an accident tho. Does anyone have the low down on this? I would doubt it's ever been "called" by an insurance company but still, it's an intriguing one.
