Ok, this may be a little unconventional or absurd, but like my father always told me right before he would say "no", it doesn't hurt to ask. I attempted my first smog since purchasing my 95 355B and failed miserably. Due to the fact that I do not run test pipes, ran techron thru a tank prior, and properly warmed the car, this baffled me. Come to find out that someone carefully and skillfully gutted my cats prior to purchase, so essentially I am running without them. This was confirmed by Ben at Salerno Motorsports. Here is my unconventinal question to you, my fellow f-chatters:

Would someone (preferrably in the Sacramento/surrounding area) be willing to "rent" me their cats (not the furry kind) so that I can install them for smog only and then remove them and give them back? Of course if any damage is done in the process, I would either buy them or correct the problem. All the work will be done by a reputable muffler company (many of you know Colby at Mufflertech).

As far as me, my name is Dan and I have attended several ********** events and the last event at Masque in El Dorodo Hills. I have a red over black 355 with the challenge grill and shields. I have posted on here a few times in the past.

Dan, maybe buy the aftermarket cats which are supposed to be better anyway (Hyperflows), install them and be done with it. You may have recourse against the seller if he represented the car has emissions-legal, especially if it was a dealer.

That way you're not breaking the law, ruining the environment (yeah, yeah, I know, wrong board...) and can have your 355 back to OEM specs. Obviously your intention was to have the car street legal anyway.

    My two lira...

Brian Crall (Rifledriver) recommended having in past thread having one's old cats recored at Miller Catylizer.

Call their Hayward, CA location...I think it runs around $550 to $600 each for rebuilding. They will cut open your old cats, install new cores, and weld them back up.

Would he not be better off with a set of Hyperflows. Sure it would be a few $$$ more, but he would gain a few HP more! ;)

You will need to learn to do this yourself because your muffler guy can put new cats in but can't put the old gutted ones back in when your done. This is illegal. So the hot ticket would be to buy cheap JC whitney $89 cats and have your muffler guy flange them to fit the OEM Ferrari pipes. Then you can pass smog and do whatever you want with the bad cats. Sometimes the muffler guy will keep the old cats. They say it is law. I'm not sure about that so ask first since Ferrari cats good or bad have value. In fact to be original some people recore them. If they do keep them there are guys like me here who have hollow ones if you need to use them as "test" pipes.

Thank you all for the advice. I have decided to just put oem cats back in and deal with the probable loss in Hps. I am toying with the idea of selling her so this would need to be done anyway.
