I saw this car yesterday and boy was I disappointed. I feel obligated to share this with my fellow F-chatters so nobody gets burnt. If I bought this car off e-bay based on the description alone I would commit suicide after it showed up. It's just sketchy all the way around. It has some service reciepts but no proof of the major being done at 30k.

It looks clean for a 40k mile car, what were the problems?

    Did you drive it?

It has been talked about alot last month or so. It looks good from pics. It is 40K mile car.

What do you find? Specifics helpful. I know a couple of F-chatters were looking at this car as well.

Yes, Thats the one thank you for posting the link I still don't know how to yet. I didn't bother to ask for a test drive since after being disappointed with the rest of the car I saw no use in waisting any more time. First let me say that from 10 to 15 feet away it looks beautiful. Upon close inspection it tends to change ones view. It appears the car came from Colorado originaly and somehow made its way to the Penske-Wynn store in Vegas. It was then wholesaled to the dealer in Tempe Arizona.
The obvious things that stood out to me were as follows:
    Front left driving light cracked
Definately repainted but does look good with deep gloss
Needs tires, right rear worn the worst
Both C pillars showing cracks at quarter panel joints
    Engine lid struts bad
Engine bay does not look to have been well cared for over the years and there is surface rust stains on alot of the frame/tube work.
The carbon fibre seat buckets are cracked and delamenating however the leather appears decent just dirty.
    The seat bealts look filthy.
The carpet is filthy and the bulkhead behind the seats is really stained and worn looking.
There are speakers mounted up and behind both seats with the leather shrunken and comming off. This just looks terrible.
There were quite a few service reciepts but nothing showing a 30k service.
It looks like the first service with belts was done around 12-13000 miles.
If you want to talk to me about this car just PM me and I will give you my phone number. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the head's up on this. I appreciate the notice regarding the dealer and the fact that I won't have to waste my time.

I don't mean to throw a wrench into your review, but it sounds like it needs to be detailed, and a couple of trim bits replaced. The way you made the warning sound, it was if it was ready to be a parts car.

The car is 13 years old and has been driven. You aren't looking at a garage queen, and since you didn't bother to start or drive it, how can you say that it is junk?

I didnt say it was junk. I just told what I saw. But I like my cars to be in better shape than that one for the money. For the right price it would be great to bring it back to its glory. My warning wasn't meant for the guys that could buy it cheap and make it nice again, guys that know these cars inside and out. It is more for the guy who is maybe looking for his first F-car and buys it online believing what the ad says about it being like new. But then again turds are new when you first drop them huh. This is just another typical e-bay dealer auction where all that glitters is not gold. For the right money, I mean wholesale money and then some back I would consider it personally. Starting and driving it mean nothing to me if I know its going to need a major right away and I'm not impressed with the rest of it anyhow. I'm not saying don't buy this car, I'm just saying proceed with caution.

Did they happen to say what they wanted for it? I know people who do know these cars inside out. For the right money, I might want it.

I would agree. It's a 40K mile car. What do you expect from 13 year old car.

It's listed on the dealer web site for $55,000. That's high IMO for the condition. If you knock $10K of that it, throw in major and it might be a good deal if mechanicals are good.

When the dealer got the car they didn't know it was a speciale. Now they do and think it's worth all the money. In conversation with the owner he said he would take $48,000 "today". Yes I agree it is a car that has been driven and has 40k on it. My Mondial 3.2 has 46k on it and is no garage queen either. However, it looks a hell of alot better than this car. The ony reason I posted about this car was to hopefully save some guy a lot of heartache when he's standing outside the transport truck waiting for his "like new" dream Ferrari and it rolls out looking like this. This car is not targeted at the enthusiast that knows their stuff but rather the dreamer looking for his first exotic. As far as what I expect for a 13 year old 40k Ferrari is that it should at least look like it was cared for better than this for the money they want. I'm sorry now that I even brought it up at all. I just assumed that most people would want a car like this that showed a little more pride. Who knows I just might be missing out on the worlds greatest 348, but thats OK.

This car (based on your description) will sell for $50K or close to that price...
Maybe not on eBay and maybe not to some 348 guru in this forum but it will sell high...

I personally would have taken the car for a test drive... A true Speciale is lighter and quicker than your average 348...you went to the trouble of spending time going to the dealer and inquiring about it....Besides a test drive tells you almost EVERYTHING you need to know about buying a Ferrari used car, not so much the dirty carpet, the neglected engine bay or broken trim pieces....The only majot expense I see right off the bat is getting new tires to pass inspection and the broken foglight...Probably the last owner was a rich slob who just drove the car instead of waxing it.

If this car is mechanically sound and has a nice repaint then it's worth the asking price IMO.

Thanks for posting your findings anyway - VK

    John,

I was also looking at this car and considering a trip to Phoenix to see it in person. You have saved me a trip until I consider this car further at distance. Maybe I'm even more inclined to visit it so I can detail a budget to restore it to a proper condition. I was considering paying anywhere from the upper $40's (if I got a deal) to the lower $50's (if I had to pay a fair price) for a car that was clean and up to date on its maintenance. The fact that it is a Speciale is a nice feature, however, does not necessarily make it a more valuable car to me.

Truth is Speciales are not faster than late model 348's, but are nearly identical mechanically with all the upgrades - and they have Motronic 2.7 for the extra ponies. They have some nice features to that make them more interesting than standard 348's, however. This is what attracted me to them.

Your assessment is valuable and allows us shoppers to be better informed. You are entitled to your opinion about its worthiness and I may disagree with you when I see it. The car sounds like it was run hard and put away wet. Mechanically, I might have to budget more of a discount off their asking price than they are willing to give now that u told them what a special car they have. :D jking

I, too, appreciate your comments. I called the dealer and he told me the car was "perfect" and that it did not need anything. He said that the PO was compulsive about taking care of this car... The pics were just vague enough to cover any of the imperfections.

Posts like this can help some people decide not to visit (like me, NOT looking for a project car), and it can help others decide to visit because they can possibly get a better deal if they want to do some work.

    thanks again!

"The paint on this vehicle makes it obvious that the owner garaged it."

Seriously, who doesn't "garage" a Ferrari?
Do some people just park it out back with the camper trailer and that old camaro you've been meaning to fix up?

Small things on an older car are to be expected.

But if it's been repainted, that's a major detail left out of the auction. That can have a huge affect on the value of the car, and more than likely was done for a good reason (accident?).

The dealer sent me a second chance offer through Ebay for $49,000. I passed. It seems like a good price for a rare 348.

I would run from this car....that sort of condition screams "cheap owner"...and if they are unwilling to clean the interior themselves, let alone pay someone to do it...then they are most likely cheapening out on the needed services as well...all big red flags. This car sounds like it has been passed around more than a cheap hooker....RUN.

Look, the car is legit; there really is one, but it is in less than optimal condition. It needs to be looked at and should sell at a discount price off of what a god car would go for. It has promise, esp. since it is a SS car. Just be heads up about it and go see it; or get a proxy inspection by someone as picky as you.
