I was just at the Porsche website looking over the Cayman again and it REALLY impressed me with its design elegance and power. Now if you follow my posts here, you know I am a Porsche driver. IMO Porsche's give nothing up to Ferrari's performance wise, but don't really stand up aesthetically as well. Ferrari and Aston set the standard for me in dead sexy cars.

But the Cayman...it may change my opinion on that, at least with respect to this one model. It has some great 60s-classic race/sports car lines, and real power in its haunches.

Am I nuts? I think the car is elegant AND powerful. Who is with me? lol :D

I'm with you, the Cayman is hot. Must admit that I didn't think it would look this good! The lines are really alluring. The rear treatment it was I'm crazy about. It has got to be a go-cart. I am just waiting for Porsche to get F1 paddles. Autoweek reported that they are scheduled to go in the 08 911 Turbo.

I bet tuner are already working on chips that can shave .5 secs off the 0-60 time. I can't imagine how taught she must feel in the twisties.

It has all the inherent Boxster-chassis stiffening, with a hard top added on. Should be ROCK solid.

As for tuners...my friends in the RUF world say a supercharged 3.8L version is anticipated...425ish HP range. :D Wowie.

But for me, the handling prowess/capability was a given since it is from Stuttgart. The aesthetics...that really surprises and impresses me. It is a real beauty; and a beauty that looks like it will stand the test of time. One you would be proud to have in your garage in 20-30 years. I can't say that about the modern 911 (maybe the turbo/GT2) or the boxster, really.

    I want one.

I totally love this car, I might acually buy one some day.
To me its more 911 than the 911. If they bump the power up a little
this car could replace the 911, but it won't. People are to set in their ways.
    So ya, Im with you!!!!!

I think the Cayman is beautiful. I glad Porsche doesnt have F1 paddles on any of there cars. The stick may be slower but you are more involved. But anyways I think Porsche did a great job on the Cayman.

If the Boxster is any indication of whats to come, I think they Cayman is hot and it will be a home run for Porsche.

I like the Cayman, but thinks it really looks too much like the Boxster and the 911. And they really slotted it between the Boxster S and the 911. I'm surprised they didn't use the 340hp V8 from the Cheyenne to make a modern 928. Now they have like 8 variants of slightly different cars. I think a modern 928 type car (sports/GT) would have opened their market up. What do you guys think?

Yes front engine rear tranny, use the turbo version of the V8 450hp.
A little longer than a 911 to acomadate 4 seats, but only 2 doors.
    Yes I like that.

It's a very elegant car. Nice curves all over the place. Actually much sexier than the 997, which is a handsome car already.

I'd like to see the interior, though. Frankly since the end of the 993 Porsche really hasn't done well by their interiors.

It does look good. I think that the only way to truly tell is to see it in person.

 I like the Cayman's looks far more than any Ferrari or Aston.

I also like the 911's looks far more than any Ferrari.

Jeez, I was at a magazine rack yesterday...it seems half the car mags have articles on the Cayman, and a good portion of them say something about it being "better" than a 911, sometimes right on the cover.

Has Porsche overshot and done what they have always sworn they wouldn't do? Threaten the 911? There will always be the country club / valet crowd that will want the "bigger more expensive, older brother" or the folks that enjoy the rear-engined dynamics/history, but is the cayman going to gobble a decent sized chunk of the 911 market share?

They say it may cost TOO much, since it is basically a hardtop boxster, but that "too much" is still less than a 911.

Enjoy it while it lasts? They are putting the finishing touches on a variant of Audi's DSG which is universally hailed as the best semi-auto tranny (twin clutch), so I have no doubt Porsche's will be at least as good. Like them or not, it will be more in Porsche's tradition than those slushbox tiptronics that they put in most of their cars.

About the Cayman, rumor has it a Club Sport version has been in the plan since the start.

It's a little hard to take all the moaning about the Ceyanne and Panamera seriously when Porsche is making so many great sports cars right now.

    Exact quote(from magainze text)
According to Wolfgang Durheimer, head of R&D, 'like everything else we make, any future variant would have to have a proven business case.' He's also adamant that the Cayman would only ever be two-wheel drive and normallly aspirated - Porsche's rigidly policed hierarchy means that it won't be allowed to threaten the 911's 'ultimate performance' credentials. But the possibility of both a basic non-S, most likely sharing the 2.7 litre Boxster's engine, and a stripped-out RS lightweight are acknowledged - and at least one racing series seems likely.

It be funny if they indeeed threatened the 911s dominance even though they sought not to. :)

That is funny, because I have read multiple quotes about how they will NOT build an RS version. :D You can definitely count on Porsche to say one thing and do another.

Unless Porsche loses its nerve, the Cayman should be a performance success, which will translate into a sales success, which will translate into track success and actual racing. An RS would almost be a certainty if they REALLY are "business case" driven and not all sworn to the 911 religion on pain of death. I think the very existence of the Cayman in 295HP form shows Porsche is...allowing another model line to creep closer to the 911. Can bypassing it be far behind? The magazine world seems to think it already has! Of course, they are all about hype and selling copies.

The next 10 years should be interesting.

the interior is similar to the new boxster interior...which is nice imo....i owned a 993 and i think the interior of the 997 is a better design..it certainly has much better ergonomics and more logical controls...taste in car interiors and interior colors seems to vary more than the exterior appearances....

    Aesthetics can be so subjective!

I really preferred the 993 and earlier interiors. They were simple and elegant, following Porsche's time-honored tradition of form follows function.

That tradition has been thrown out the window of late, now that Porsche has decided to go mainstream. They should get rid of the mandatory fluff, at least on their so-called sports cars.
